I replace my Carb? Should I go Toyota, CCOT or another tank?

It would probably be best to replace the tank. If your not sure, install a clear fuel filter and check for the presence of rust. If you see any then go ahead and purchase an OE Toyota tank and you'll be all set for another 30+ years.

along these lines. I cleaned out my tank with muric acid, soaked twice for 24 hours, used marine clean for 3 hours and still when I look inside it has a white film which is some type of coating. I dont want to waste using the rest of the por tank restoration if it is not going to properly seal the tank because there is something else on the inside of it. other than that it looks very clean with no rust or gunk cominng out of the tank when I cleaned it the first time. No holes but it is a 40 year old tank. What do I do.

Did you

dilute the marine clean at 1:1?

rinse out with clean (hot if possiable) water?

After cleaning you should use POR Metal Ready, this is an acid etch which gives a key for the paint. Marine clean is alkaline and doesn't key the surface.

thanks for asking malcb. Not yet. After first round of marine clean (yes 1:1 with hot water) I stopped because I did not have time to do everything, and wanted to get a forced air heater to dry out tank so to avoid flash rust. I am going to try again next week and bring a hair dryer with me.
1. marine clean
2. POR metal ready
3. POR paint.

I sure it will work out fine. Otherwise the tank is in good shape. Maybe if I didn't have such a good flashlight I would not even know.

No not nessessary. If anything you could take it out and drain it and look inside to see the condition. If there is rust then take it to a radiator shop that will work on tanks and have them line it. It's pretty cheap. And will last forever. Or do it your self.

If you want to buy one call Ralph Hayes Toyota and get the 25% off. He will ship it to your door. And from him it should be pretty cheap.

There is nothing wrong with asking a bunch of questions. I think it's great.

You just need to slow down and do one thing at a time. You will find it will save you money in the long run.

If you do need a new tank, for sure get an OEM. Go with a Toyota parts guy who'll give you 25% off for being a Mudder, you'll get a better tank for cheaper than the aftermarket tanks. I've bought stuff from CDan and the Ralph Hayes guys. Both were excellent to deal with, shipping was timely and shipping rates were better than the major vendors.

The po of my truck had the carb, fuel filter assembly, lines and tank replaced. The replacement tank is a poly tank. I have no problems with it except it is only a 13 gallon tank. Go with an OEM tank from Toyota.

flash rust and POR

I wouldnt worry too much about a little flash rust with the POR, actually POR likes to adhere to rust better than clean metal and since you cant rough it up on the inside it may actually help the POR adhere.

I rebuilt my carb, cleaned the nasty tank, replaced some questionable hoses and installed a clear filter so I could see what was going on....replaced with another clear filter couple weeks later and all is well...

How does your tank look?

The white film is most likely what is left of the factory zinc coating, and that is good. The tank sealer goes right over it.
