I like P38's. It was very advanced for its time.:D

[EVOKE -B-] I suggest you take your friend up on the peek and determine for yourself if it's worth the search. Granted, RRs will be more prevalent in the UK and may well be less costly, but if you find--as we do--that the TLC is better-built, then you may also agree it's worth the search.

But I also suggest you decide not on looks but on what you want this vehicle to do for you. The TLC may not be the prettiest hog on the block, but it may well be the most savory...:D [/EVOKE]

Damn, that's good prose! Did I write that? ? ?

Hey! Didn't the RR HSE just score worlds least reliable car award this year. Was that consumer reports that wrote it up? It had the highest repair record of anything out there! Google that one if you want un-biased info. A buddy of mine has an older one (late 90s) and he is quite happy with it. Though he also has a Jag and Lotus to drive when it is at the shop....

Consumer reports lists the RangeRover/LandRover as one of the biggest POS vehicles on the market. Also their resale value is garbage. They look good.... but are not reliable and as mentioned the differentials are not up for heavy abuse.

There is a saying.... if you want to go 4x4ing in style take a Land Rover.... if you want to come back from 4x4ing without breakage take a Land Cruiser :D

Nice RT,

The Discovery Channel did an episode on a fully restored P-38 retrieved from Iceland after a forced landing in 1942. Showed it flying (after being restored) out of Middlesboro Kentucky airport for the first time in over 60 years.

there were some guys trying to do the same with a B29,, they did not give the APU any maintenance I guess figuring it was not important, it burnt up op on take off :crybaby:, before that one of the guys had died in the process of working on it :frown:

I am glad the P38 guys were successful, there are less and less of these around every year

A jag to drive while the Rover is in the shop??? EEEKKKK!!!! Your buddy is a masochist... or he's made out of money. I guess the Lotus is there drive while the Rover AND Jag are in the shop.

Met an older British gent last night driving a 1980 BJ40. I just happened to be coming back from getting my tires balanced on my FJ40. Well, the story goes he had a Rover for a bit, but kept breaking halfshafts, so he went out and bought the BJ40 in 1980... and he's been driving it ever since.

If you feel the need to ask the question then really the RR is not for you. I'm a LR person (own 4 Series rovers and one 89 RRC) and to be honest you need to have a good reason to own one. If you don't feel really compelled to buy one then don't!! Save yourself the time and future headaches and buy a Toy. You'll likely come out ahead in the end. The P38 is something of an interim model- the RR classic that came before it had been in production since 1972 and was a decent vehicle, the P38 was a model that lasted for a much shorter period of time and for good reason. Also keep in mind that many P38s use EAS which is great when it is in good nick but after years of neglect or abuse it can and will go to hell- then your vehicle is stuck on the bumpstops until you go to a dealer and have him reset the computer and fix the problem with the suspension or valve block.

A RR or Land Rover can be a great capable vehicle but in general they are not up to the build quality or longevity of a TLC.

I've owned both

Hi, I'm in a decent position to answer this, having gone from a 2001 4.6 SE with 40K miles to my current 97 LC with 140K miles.

Most on here have covered the differences, although there is some understandable bias towards the LC showing. The technical advancements on the rover vs. the LC are amazing---it beats the LC hands down in interior quality, stereo quality, climate control, power (with the 4.6), and on road comfort.

However, while you Brits may have some of the world's finest engineers, you also have some of the world's worst auto manufacturing IMHO. Thank God I had a warranty on my Rover, as it had well over $5000 in repairs covered by warranty in the two years I'd owned it. It leaked oil from every seal, and the electrical problems never seemed to end. In the one year I've owned my 4 year older LC with over triple the miles, I've only had to change the oil.

To me Japanese cars usually seem like souless appliances, but the LC is different---it's from a different era when vehicles were more purpose built. And While I miss the RR on long highway trips, I don't miss looking over my shoulder constantly wondering what's going to go wrong next.

The only truck I'd trade this LC in for is either another Defender 90 (had one of those too, and it WAS worth the problems) or a MB G500, but it would be a tough, tough choice. I see myself hanging onto this truck for some time.
