Looked at a '94 with lockers today. Green, gray leather, no roof rack, running boards. Only rust was a tiny bubble at the base of the rear lift gate window and the running boards are rusty. Undercarriage amazingly clean for a midwest truck. DS axle shaft recently replaced, not sure why, PS birf was repacked by the same small mechanic shop. There is oil on both knuckle housings, but the seller says the mechanic says that is old oil (wouldn't you clean this up?). The axle housing part of the knuckle (the sphere) was pretty dry, as was most of the knuckle felt. I can't quite tell if there is current leakage. He showed me the receipt from the local mechanic and it had all the seals, an axle shaft ($619), and other appropriate stuff included - $1300 total.

A few tiny scratches in the otherwise nice factory paint and a cracked tail light lens. Leather is worn and cracked.

New Michelin Cross Terrain tires.

I couldn't get the lockers to engage after a couple minutes of trying. I basically drove a serpentine path down a gravel driveway, then went in a circle about ten times, then reversed direction. Backed up a couple times too. Seller knew they were there, but didn't know that his new-to-him '96 didn't have them! Says he's never ever used them.

I could not see any leakage from the head gasket area. Engine looked pretty clean. All fuids fresh appearing. Green coolant, though. Truck drove great on road and off - no weird noises that I could find and no handling oddities. Brakes worked great.

The guy listed this truck at $10,750 three weeks ago, came down to $9750 after a week, then $8750, now the ad in the local paper says "first $7500 takes it". I think I could get it for $6000-6500, especially if I wait another week.

Nice guy, pillar in the local community, I trust him, but he's not mechanically inclined and though he loves Cruisers (he's owned four now) he doesn't have a clue about the details that make them great or that his front axle isn't perfect.

What should I do? Is this a steal at $6500 even if I have to redo the axle? Should I worry about the lockers, or go back and try again?

Being able to buy a local vehicle is a big plus for me. As a business owner and the prime mission critical employee it's very expensive for me to travel. I want this to be my DD but of course it will get lifted, bullbar, sliders, tires, etc.

I'm thinking of bringing it to the car wash and pressure washing the knuckles to get the oil off, then having him drive it to work for a few days and see if I can see any leakage.

I didn't take pics - wouldn't be much for you guys to see. Looks like a stock green 80.

thanks!

Buy it.

If you do not want to buy it please PM the seller's phone number to me.

You didn't say how many miles. Sounds like a good deal. For $6500 you could flush the rad and put in Toyota rad, baseline the fluids, fix the diffs and still be ahead.

Is all the leather cracked or can you just recover the front?

This would make cruiser #4, now you need a bigger garage!

check and make sure the locker actuators are actually present, there have been a few found to have the switch but no lockers installed (fruad), how much is is going to cost to fix the depends on what is wrong and your skill level, anywhere from free to over 1K, they may be just stiff and need some excersize

price sounds good even without lockers

Sounds like a good deal at 6500 but too bad about the color.

I'm sure you would be able to fix the lockers (providing they are there).

bah, nothing that a few rattle cans of silver won't improve greatly...

Depending on mileage sounds like an awesome deal. Buy it, oh and by the way thats a fine color.

D'OH! miles are 160K

Dan, do you really want a Michigan truck? The body's not rusty, but it's also no where near as corrosion free as a western truck would be - every bolt will be a PITA to remove. I'm used to that.

Just the driver's seat and a little of the front passenger seat leather is cracked; the second and third row seats are mint.

It would make a good commuter car, as I'm going to start a couple of satellite offices and the winter time driving to those can get pretty treacherous...

Anybody want to buy a '76 BMW 2002? It'll be in the For Sale forum within a day or two - working on the photos still.

thanks for the comments!

That's still a pretty decent deal...especially for the driving you're talking about.

Check for the actuator like Ravan mentioned, but I'd buy it.

sounds more like the question is WHEN are you buying it? pics will be needed.

going to have to start taking stable shots like PIMP :)

buy it. assume the worst about the knuckle job but it's still a great price. you would have to factor in a knuckle job on almost any 80 for sale at that mileage/price range. axle shaft may have been replaced because it was grooved around the oil seal so they were concerned the new oil seal would leak. if so, the job was done by a careful mechanic. other possibility is that he replaced both birfield and axle shaft and called it an axle shaft. Price sounds too high for shaft alone. I know NAPA quoted me a rebuilt combo axle and CV as one part. they would not sell just a birf.

Sounds solid to me, especially if you can steal it for $6500. Verify the lockers exist and try to 'excercise' them some more. I had a similar recent experience having only 'excercised' my lockers once before in the 10 year ownership of my beast. Must have shifted into low two dozen times on a rocky campground road and nothing. Next time I tried it after driving home (about 4 hours) they locked right up. Not saying a warmed up truck made the difference. I don't know.

Do all the LC dash clusters have the locker idiot lights regardless of lockers? I don't know, but I'll bet you Dan and others will.

I think maybe they did replace the axle and birf as a unit - the receipt said something like C/V-half shaft.

I think I'll go back tonight and feel him out and take a can of brake cleaner and clean the oil off the knuckles.

The locker lights on the dash were flashing like mad. I'll crawl under tonight if I go back...

I think I'm gonna offer $6000...

Wife's not gonna be happy.

Don't buy it, it's too much money < wifes subliminal message

PM me :D code 503 in progress

You say "oil" on the knuckle housing but the axle balls and felt are dry? Are we talking fresh oil, or dried crusty grease on the knuckle housing? At any rate if you don't see it on the ball, you probably don't have birf soupage going on. Might pull the knuckle plug and stick a long straw down in it and pull it out to see what the consistancy of the grease is (if you're worried about it). Have you seen the pics. of a soupy birf to know what contaminated grease will look like?

LOL! I don't need a picture. Yeah, I know what it all looks like. This is oil, not grease, on the knuckle housing, but yes, the ball looks pretty dry, maybe a little grease around the edges...there is one spot where it could possibly be leaking, but I can't tell.

I'll definitely stick something in and check out the knuckle grease - d'oh! - I should have thought of that - that's the value of this forum - between us we won't overlook anything. Didn't have time to go back tonight - maybe tomorrow.

thanks!
