I have a 800 square foot shop well insulated with 9 foot ceiling and a cement floor. My question to you is it more efficient to leave the heat down over night or while away and then bring it up while working?

keep it at 67 while working and off while away..

Bigger issue IMHO is keeping it warm enough to prevent condensation on cold metal parts. In my unheated garage if the temps swing quickly (happens far too often fer me...) it looks like it just rained in the shop. Rust happens QUICK! If you plan to be in there daily I'd try and hold it above 50 just so the tools aren't painful to grab.

I would probably keep at a low temp, like around 55-60 when your gone then turn it up while you are working! Just a suggestion i keep a heat dish on! i stoke up a fire when i am working in it and keep my heat dish on when i am gone

Good point. Where we live the temp inside of the shop has maybe dropped below 40 once. It usually hovers around 50 when cold out and that is without heat.

If that was the coldest it got where I lived i.e. no fear of pipes freezing I would never turn it on until an hour or two before I was planning on doing some work. Save the $$$$.

If that's the coldest it gets, buy a box of brown jersey gloves for a couple of dollars and forget about the heater!

That's not cold! That's just a hair nippy first thing in the morning; once you get going it's fine with a sweatshirt and light jacket. I thought you were talking cold like high of 20 with a starting temp below zero in the morning or somethin'! :D

Since your shop stays fairly warm already leave the heat off over night and crank it up when you start first thing in the morning. Before you're finished with the first cupajoe yer ready to go!

is it forced air or radiant heat. It makes a difference. If forced air, I would turn it off in your situation. If it is radiant, leave it set at 60 and turn p when needed.

I find that with a wool watch cap the garage at 50 degrees isn't too bad. Also helps protect the head when you bang it on something.

If you plan on leaving the heat on all the time then roof insulation to R-49 could be worth it.
