Don't want to name any companies but I was quoted $36 to shipping a 14x7" padded envelope that weighs <2lbs on UPS.
My own rate using pirate ship is $8 and I am not a high volume shipper...

Don't get me started. My Doctor's office charged me $45 to forward my insurance card info to a vendor when I could of done it for free over the phone. I asked why I wasn't able to do it. They responded it wasn't their policy. Its not just shipping, its everywhere you go nowdays. Its OK to name names, most people already know, we won't get sore over it.

Porsche and Audi dealerships in town are now charging fees if you use a credit card in the service or parts dept.
This is what we have come to? 3% fees on top of inflated part prices?

While I agree with your shipping complaint, CC fees are real. We paid over $30K last year in CC fees when we didn’t charge. For a small business, that’s **a lot ** of money. And for most of my clients, 3% service fee is not even a cup of coffee for them.

I don’t have any qualms charging this while also presenting other FOP options for the client if they choose to forego a charge (cash, check, money order, wire transfer, Zelle, Venmo).

**I should also caveat this that I have worked at dealerships; I’ve run parts departments.**

They will do everything they can to monetize any opportunity to make a cent.

An Audi/Porsche dealership can easily make up processing fees in markups.

I don’t know how I ended up on this thread but credit card processors bend over small business with higher % fees.

The specialty shop should have a credit card surcharge if your state allows it. A up front nice sign or paragraph on a quote page explaining to customers why is more than fair. Like you said most people especially in a niece market like Landcruiser would be ok with paying it.

we will end up paying one way or another.

either upfront fees or higher product costs. just like bidding on BAT, you have to factor in the 5%...or ebay fees...

what does bug me is multimillion dollar businesses like porsche dealerships charging 3%. it's the principle of it.

My only retort is 3% on multimillions of dollars is still 3%. I hope my business can claim it’s making millions in the next few years and I don’t foresee it getting any less painful to pay. The real question is how much does it really cost to run a credit card company if advertising were ignored.

Making 3% on a giant portion of a multi trillion dollar economy must be nice.

So, where does this end? Will I have to pay other fees you are charged for running a business?

The men's room at your Porsche dealership doesn't have to be free.

It ends with you. If you don't like the fee structure at a business, take your business elsewhere.
And consumers will.

3% on credit cards
0% on debit cards
0% on cash or check

not sure if the credit card perks equal out with the 3%
if you want to not use real money, you pay for it

I don't like using debit cards. It's directly connected to my bank and I like to have the least amount of people to have that # stored. Credit cards offer a buffer and protection.
So it's more than just rewards.

Even when I travel, I have a second bank account with enough cash needed for travel...from Charles Schwab that I use for withdrawing cash abroad. That way if I do lose it or it's stolen, damage is minimal.

Curious to see how this plays out in the long term. Something will eventually give.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand. Ridiculous shipping rates...

We are all being gouged by every corporation and government body.

The cost of everything is insane these days. I’m in Canada, the liberal regime here is ****ing everyone. Gas has a a “clean fuel tax” which is nuts. I bought $87 worth the other day, $11 was taxes. Fuel here is $1.82 per liter, that’s $6.90 US/gallon. I’m tired of it!

Shipping stuff, is insane. I very seldom purchase from the US anymore because of shipping costs and it’s slow. I can get parts cheaper and faster from Most all other parts of the world. Including Australia, Asia and Europe. Heck, some US businesses won’t even sell to Canada. To them I say🖕

Every credit card processor charges different rates. And if you input the card manually, there is a different percentage charge, etc.

I knew AmEx had higher fees, maybe 5%? not sure they still are or not
didn't know a manual entering was higher fee

maybe 7 or 8 years ago, our Snapon rep told me has was paying $14,000-15,000 a year in CC fees, he usually gave me a better deal as I was paying cash.
this seemed to start taking off in mid late 2010's, with the slow switch to cashless type payments, and businesses realized how much they were forking over,
along with other "junk" fees, bag fees on airlines, etc and big business realized how much joe public is willing to pay

as for shipping rates, even flat rate boxes are high now
I've never used pirate ship, so not a clue as to how it works, the company may not use the service??
some companies will ask when I place the order, as to how I want it shipped or cheapest, I get good service where I live by UPS, Fedex and postal, so I don't have a preference.
in the old days it was stated as shipping and handling, a person still needs to take time and box for safe travel and print the label

Pirate Ship is a free, web-based shipping software that provides deeply discounted USPS and UPS shipping rates without monthly fees or hidden costs. It allows users to easily print shipping labels, import orders from e-commerce platforms like Etsy, and access commercial rates, often used for small business logistics and casual shipping

The $8 rate for UPS I got is a 80% discounted rate from $36 (what I was charged by "small business").
Nothing stops small businesses or anyone for that matter from using Pirate ship.

I was able to ship wheels for $50 each...otherwise it would have been double or triple that..
