When I start the cruiser and put it in reverse it engages fine. Drive to the local trails and shifting is fine. It's not perfect but it engages in L,1,2,and 3 with out to much effort. Once I hit the trail and put it in 4high and lock the hubs it is really hard to get in any gear and I have to really force it to engage. any ideas? Tranny is a sm465 hooked to a v8 and a stock 3speed transfer case.

IMO the bearing on the output shaft going into t-cast is bad letting shaft walk backwards , just my o.

I'm haveing problems with my 465 locking up and not shifting it is also worst when offroad or going downhill. I think I may have taken too much off the front bearing retainer to fit the bellhouesing. I'm going to try a new retainer and fit it closer. Let us know if you find out whats going on with yours. After redoing the clutch system and retourqing everything I'm out of ideas. https://forum.ih8mud.com/newreply.php?do=newreply&noquote=1&p=480783#

I went through this a while back and finally my entie tranny went to sh#t. I had mine rebuilt and when they rebuilt it they forgot to put some sort of nut on the output shaft that kept it from walking around. The shadt was walking around and vibrating. It knocked out the output bearing and a bearing inside. Mine would not shift under loads and when shifting into third the shifter would freeze up. I got everything fixed and it shifts great. Sm465 should shift really nice and with ease. I bet your rear ouput is walking around. Just my .02

I don't know much about the sm465, but I notice that shifting problems come up quite a bit on the POR boards, so a search there might be revealing. I seem to remember that there is a common problem with the top cover, but I could be full of $h%t too.
