hey guys i need more help here. Took the rig out last weekend for some quality time and she ran hot the hole time. It was about 80 and i had to run the heat on, needless to say not very comfortable. I have a new radiator in it water pump good, i need to check the thermostat but i think its good. My question is had anyone else had this prob with their 2f(1987 fj60). And if so how you fix it?? I was thinking of the old flex fan instead of the stock one, or maybe the old electric, but id rather not use electric. Well any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I would not replace the stock fan clutch with anything else.

are you sure its running hot? are you just going by the guage?

t-stat I would check fur sure.

If the rad is new, then its t-stat or fan clutch or a bunch of mud on the raditator.

My fj60 was running warm after a carb rebuild......a new radiator cured it.

Thermostat stuck closed would do it. Really clogged radiator would do it. Bad gauge would look that way.

Not onlyvthermostat, but the gaskets that are suppose to be there. Sometimes PO's forget to put whats required on.

Of course I am assuming you checked the fluid level and verified your antifreeze is still good. You could also flush the radiator. Not a bad thing to do now and then anyways.

That gasket missing wouldn't cause overheating, but trouble with warming up in winter, Ken.

Thanks Dave for the clarification. So it would have to be a stuck close thermostat, something clogging the line, or not enough fluid. Right?

a stuck closed t-stat will cause almost instant(like within minutes) overheating, it will not lower at all........just keep getting hotter and hotter till she blows

it could.

I'll tell ya when the t-stat in my fj80 stuck closed I drove maybe 2 mins, 1 mile and the gauge pegged all the way, overflow bottle blowing crap all over. I was amazed it went so hot so fast.

So John, What your saying is if the Thermostats fails open, then the heat won't work, if it fails closed, it will overheat instantly. Those are the two most probable, but it could fail partially. If thats correct, then we may be back to either quantity and quality of the fluid or crap in the radiator as most probable. Is that right?

WOW, most thermostats fail closed, I have seen only one fail open in about a bizzillon.

Check temp with an external source,

and check to see if you might have a hose that collapses at all, with throttle, etc... might need the spring inside the hose if it does.

is all the air out? nasty air pocket can cause weird things to happen.

If the radiator has been replaced, did they put the shroud back on? Overheating especially at low speeds is often a lack of air being pulled through the radiator, via the shroud. Without the shroud, the fan just recirculates engine compartment air instead of pulling outside air through the rad.

well wher to start. there is plenty of good fluid radiator flushed out beginning of year, she heated up fine all winter, and now first shot in the mudshe heated up but when i put heat on she cooled down but had to run it that way all the time. I'm thinking i should go out and look at the radiator because it probably is a bit muddy. Oh yeah the shroud is in fine and lined up perfectly even with the lift.
