So.... It's becoming a problem: I rebuilt and swapped in an h55 into my 81 BJ42. Original problem is it would not go into 1st/2nd when hot say at a stoplight. Yesterday, I noticed this is now extending to 3rd/4th. My (somewhat irrational) fear is that I mucked up the transmission rebuild but I'll push that aside for now.

  1. Pilot bearing new
  2. New clutch (when rebuilt a few years ago)
  3. Flywheel surfaced so straight
  4. Clutch pedal adjusted as per FSM
  5. Clutch slave freeplay adjusted as per FSM (ensuring the slave cylinder is fully retracted when adjusting)
  6. Clutch release spring plenty strong

Am I correct to be thinking:
It's difficult to shift into gear because the transmission input is still somewhat spinning?
Perhaps my aftermarket slave cylinder does not have sufficient throw?
Would an OEM slave be the way to go?
Are my clutch tines too far bent back? I did not check this.....

So, investigating this i see 31470-60110 would be the correct slave for the h55. The 4 speed release cylinder is 31470-60050. @partsgurus is there a difference in throw between the 2?

Have you tried pumping the clutch pedal a couple of times and trying again? You could have a bit of air in there, or even better, a bit of water.
When was the last time you replaced the fluid?

Do you have an inspection cover, so you can see if the clutch disc stops or slows down enuff.

Gear oil is ap4, synchros were brand new 9 years ago now I think..... It get very low mileage per year. No inspection, and the fork blocks the view in the fork slot.

HOWEVER, some 4-5 small bubbles in the line. So, Re bled 4oz worth and will test tomorrow. Also took the pedal a bit higher to increase the stroke. Test tomorrow!

Edit: Drove it for a solid hour, problem almost gone. I will re-bleed and look for possible leaks as well as re adjust pedal height to fsm spec and take it from there.
