all this filter talk is just silly, have you noticed how most makers have at least two grades of the same filter now?? the upgrade or "gold" series if you will is the old good filter and the regular one is the new cheapo one, just get the gold series filter of whatever maker you like, i usually buy NAPA gold if only because i do most of my parts shopping there.
just like all those big "what oil" debates,,, other than a few exceptions they are all relatively the same, proper maint is most important to good lifespan.

Thanks for the info Big Blue but what I was looking for was part numbers but no worries! I have found a list of all the part numbers of other brands cross referenced with Toyota Part number 90915 - 30002:

When checking for other brands: the fliter requires a 24mm x 1.5 mm hole.

WOW what a gem of a list, I'll definitely put it in my parts list!!! BUT... Are these ALL dual element filters like the OEMs are? I believe this is very important... They are really good filters, after 12,000km my oil is still quite clean...

The Toyota 90915-30002 is a dual element filter, it is very important considering the soot a diesel produces... Not many flters out there are built that way, and personnally, I doubt that FRAM would go to the trouble of making such a filter!

Of course, I'd LOVE to see how the FRAM (or any non OEM from that list) are actually built... That filter (dual-element) is very different from the one used on the 3B!

if you notice i said "other than a few exceptions they're all pretty much the same"

if your application requires dual element, or anti drainback or gold flakes in the paper by all means make sure you use the right part.

Sorry about the confusion, RHINO, I thought you were replying to CruiserGord's post listing the equivalence to the 90915-30002 filter, which is a dual element filter.

I agree about the filter for the 3B engine, though. No difference from my experienc between the Toyota OEM filter and the Canadian Tire one for that engine (took two apart to fnd out)

The B engine filter is a common single stage type. For this design the Purolator PL30001, Motorcraft [Ford] FL-1A, Donaldson P550008, filters are the best choice.

Cdn Tire, and 'oil brand' filters are made by Fram, generally rated as not the best quality filter.

Would the B engine benefit from a 2 stage filter like the H engine uses?

If so are there any recommended part numbers?

How do the "special" Fram filters stack up? They have some other types branded as Extended Guard or Extreme Guard or something like that. I was reading the packages and one of them claims 99% single-pass efficiency.

Hmmm... Good question! What about the filter flange for that filter? Would that be doable? In any case if my old truck ran (and still runs) after 600,000 km using regular CDN tire filters, what do we have tro complain about!!!

Ok the list of Brand Names and Part numbers are filters that will match the dimensions of the toyota 90915-30002. This does not mean that they all have dual element, most probably don't. You would have to ask the manufacturer unless you find one on a store shelf that stats this feature. From what I know the Baldwin filters supposedly (not 100% sure) are a dual element filter. Kenworth and Peterbuilt delearships sell these behind their parts counters so they couldn't be a bad filter, I'm going to give one a try and then cut it up after its been used and see if it is a dual element.

Donaldson P502017 and Denso 115410-0161(dual Element) are also filters that can be used .

we are talking about 3bs here..... how much difference can a filter make on 25 yr old engine. Just put whatever on there an do it often. Your not going to take a 200k engine and make it go for 400k more based on the filter or synthetic.

spend the extra bucks on a nice Latte.

I can tell you that I have never been able to get one of the Fram filters here--I've just wanted to know how available they are. Even special order--no luck.

I use the Toyota 90915-30002 on my faux-Hilux, but I have got a few of the NAPA 1368 filters. In fact, I try to keep one of the NAPA filters behind my seat "just in case."

THe NAPA 1368 is about half the length of the Toyota filter, so I wouldn't use one long term, but it's at least good enough to get you home.

I'll get pics of the two next time I'm home (about a week) for comparison.

I don't know why you'd use anything else--the Toyota filters are only $12 or so a piece--which is cheap insurance in my book.

I understand it's puzzling for you guys south of the border to even bother about prices, since they are less than half of what we pay here for the same filter. The fact of the matter is cost of car parts and technology in general is on average 50% to twice what you guys pay for down there.

At $12 apiece none of us cannucks would even bother thinking about using anything else... But the average price here is more than double that for that filter, heck it was $35 at my local dealer a year ago, on special order on top of that...

I have said what I think of the stinking canadian prices and won't repeat myself, I'll be called anti-Canadian again... I coudn't care less, I just get them in the US and I would suggest other fellow cannucks refuse being gouged and simply bring back some parts from the States when you get down there on vacation, just get a case like I do, the savings will pay for your trip's expenses (I saved $300 getting just on winter tires getting them in Maine instead of Québec last fall)...

Another example of a cheap price for a common part is the air filter, costs on average $35 here before taxes, it's less than half that at Autozone ($12.99 for the STP SA376 last time I got one)

I could go on and on... Bottom line is we NEED alternatives here because of the high cost of those parts. I know oil filters represent very little when you pay more than US$5.00 a gallon for diesel and $11.00 for a litre of synthetic oil, but as our salaries are in general not nearly as high as yours for the same qualifications and taxes are much higher, every bit helps.

Yeh the toyota stealership wanted $45 for a plain oem oil filter here in Edmonton. I instead bought 3 packages of Handi Wipes for $10! This May I am driving down to Golden CO with my wife for a vacation and at the same time stopping by Slee offroad to pick up a couple bumpers(front and back). I will most likely get a case of oil filters and a few air filters at the same time too.
