I wanted to confirm resetting the timing on my 73 FJ40 with a 60 series dizzy and modified carb base to accept the correct vacuum.

1st. I believe, from FAQ, the timing ball should be at the lower passenger side of the timing window. I wanted to confirm this.

2nd. Should setting the timing be the same as usual by disconnecting the vacuum lines at the dizzy, plug them to the carb, and set timing?

1. Set the timing as you would for any F distributor. 7 degrees BTDC is the factory spec. It might run a little better with a little more, like 10 degrees. You can find the sweet spot by trial and error. Advance it until it starts to ping under heavy load and then back it off until it stops pinging.

2. Yes.

You worry too much.

It will start up and run +/- 10 degrees of the nominal 7 degrees BTDC. Once it is running, you set the timing anyway and finding the best spot is trial and error. It will be close to 7 degrees BTDC.

Yes I do worry too much. Spent too much time on this to burn out the pistons or run super lean and clog up my carb 100 miles form home. Happened too much in a CJ5 I had (now that that is gone, it takes time to get past that feeling o dread every time I left the house). Toyoda is much better.

So I set the timing with the ball about dead in the middle of the lower edge of the timing window. It brought my RPMs from j470 to about 700ish, just where I like it. Good power and no lug starting off the line with 35s and the stock 3 speed. Good times.
