My 74 fj seems to have a seized engine. It has been sitting for a while.

How can I safely get it moving again?

Poor marvel mystery oil down every cylinder and over the valve train wait a few days and repeat. Then try and turn it over by hand. Search this site for starting an engine that has been sitting for a while, there are several posts about it.

the marvel works good and sometimes an impact on the balancer nut sets up a vibration and they usually free up .works for me

Yup the marvel is good. I used it on a 1948 REO Firetruck that had been sitting for years. After about a week it broke right loose then it actually started after some plug cleaning and all.

I had to use a crowbar and pry the flywheel to get mine going and has been going ever since....

X2 on prying on the teeth of the flywheel... Had a scout engine that was siezed. Pb blaster down the cylinders, let it sit a few days, then pryed on the flywheel to get it unsiezed...

How much faith do you have in hoping to use this engine with out a tear down? The more careful you are the better chance you have of saving it "IF" there was not a pre-existing condition. Make sure all accessories and transmission are free.
Pull the plugs check for rust in cylinder or on plugs them selves. Drain oil check for water there. Poor diesel feul down the carb till it runs out the plug holes. Put those plugs in. The ones it doesn't run out of fill those then install the plugs let it set a day or two. Drain the oil again check carefully for any thing in diesel feul. Pull the plugs. Try to turn damper pulley or pry the fly wheel to turn if it turns do a couple revolutions by hand. If it is still siezed, try to heat the engine by torpedo heater, big quartz lights, torch running hot water through it what ever, the hotter you get it the better. You can even try heating down into the cylinder directly (be cautious of fumes) put the diesel back in and let cool and soak. Then try again.
When it turns install oil, crank with starter with out the plugs a minute or two, make sure oil pressure builds. Install the plugs and see if it fires. It will smoke A LOT till the feul burns out. After engine reaches operating temp change oil again.

Thanks guys this is all great. The tranny is out becuase I am replacing the bell housing. It was cracked at the starter.

I will likely try moving the flywheel gently after gooping it up :)

hell I started mine after it sat for more then 7 years. I drained the oil, cleaned the carb, put in new oil, and put some oil on the valve train. I hit the key and it pretty much fired right up. I drove it about two years, four wheeling and in town/interstate before it blew up. But I had a water pump fail and it overheated on the interstate. Good luck whatever you decide on doing.

Heres my 1967 45 after it had been sitting for 8 years you would be surprised well these motors do even when they have been siting for years

ok, I did the marvel thing. It sat and I did it again. I pried at the flywheel with a pry bar and it will go around but pretty hard. I even pulled the plugs and it is the same.

What am I doing wrong?

I'll be doing this next week on a 68 F engine that has sat for 20 years! I'll be putting this marvel mystery oil to the test!!! Wish me luck. I should ad that it's been stored indoors in a warm, dry garage.

I had my starter check and they said it was fine. Installed it just clicks like it doesn't want to quite engage. Maybe the throw out is bad??

Wishing it had been running when I got it.

Getting it running would have been great, but if you can get this one running it will be a real good feeling. Mine had been sitting for over 7 years and PO had never even tried to turn it over. I was able to get it running and it was a great feeling once it was running.

It turns hard by hand, and the starter cannot turn it?
That means the engine has spun a bearing. :frown:

Could also be a bad starter.:hhmm:
