Anyone know what Tahuya looks like?

I was there 3-4 weeks ago and it was fine. The west side is pretty swampy but nothing we couldn't get through.

If anyone wants to hit Tahuya tomorrow I will be on the 6:45am ferry from West Seattle.

It was great! My buddy and I had a fun day! We stuck mostly to the trails that I had done in the past, but I think there is more to be had there after talking to some locals.

Hey all! Just happened across this thread. I'm moving to Issaquah July 1st and would love to join you guys for your trail runs!

Renton here 👋

Hey Guys! Looking to take my daughter wheeling/backpacking/camping this weekend before she heads to college. Can you guys recommend good spots I might combine the three? Preferably within 1-3 hours of Sammamish and not crowded. We'd be tent camping, lightweight gear, don't need services (just a flat spot). The wilder the better. Thanks!

n fork teanaway river. There’s a nice backpack up there. I’ll go find the link. I think it’s a loop around a nice crag. Lots to see and beautiful country.

They call it boulder / de roux. For some reason I think Esmeralda.

We tried early season and would’ve needed snow shoes. Should be good now. Thanks

What’s your definition of wheeling? Would change what I recommend.

Thanks @grinchy!

Fair point @tbisaacs. 🙂

I’d say about the limit of what an experienced driver in an unmodified LX570 on 33” RGs can handle. No sliders, winch, or buddy to recover me. So not looking to get stuck anywhere.

My LX isn’t babied and I’ve pushed it to the limit. (plenty pinstriped with all four corners and steps scratched up and waiting for upgrade). I like 6/7 (depending on rating system) but better keep it at a 4/5 for this trip.

Found the guidebook. The roads there are not going to challenge your rig.

I would recommend Fortune Creek Jeep Trail and then camp at Gallagher head lake. Moderate trail with huge pay off at the end.

If it's busy you can go back down the trail and take right and camp along Tucquala Lake. There is a camp ground there but go past it and take one off the dispersed spots:

Several trailheads along this road.

Thanks guys. This is perfect. Looks like we can even hit Esmeralda Basin loop from Gallager Lake.

Just moved up to Redmond from Florida and I'm excited with the terrain here. Look forward to being more active on here. See you guys/gals around.

My ride as it stands now.

I’m looking for gps or beta on a site north of mt st Helen’s in Gifford Pinchot. Edge of the blast zone would be perfect

Well, we did the visitors center and then the ridge viewpoint at Mt St Helen’s
Follows that with a 10 mile in and out down into the blast zone / valley.

Earthmate showed a bunch of forest roads on the way out (North side). The first 8 or so were all posted by lumber companies and had Locked gates. Never seen anything like it in a National forest. We opted for a leisurely supper of chicken fajitas at a viewpoint of the mountain, and drove home around dusk. It was another 90 min minimum to pivot around to the other north side entrance, and I’m not a huge fan of trying to find a camp blind in the dark. Only a 2 hr drive back north.

Welcome!

Thanks all for the tips on Gallaher lake! The lake campsites were full but the trail up was a lot of fun and we were treated to some fantastic views of Mt Rainier. I talked to a group with heavily modded Jeeps up at the lake who cautioned me from going further up the trail in my (ehem) Lexus... dropping a bunch of comments about articulation, lifting wheels, break over... silly Jeep peeps just don't understand  I just thanked them for the trail tips and did it anyway--no sweat.

We ended up finding a phenomenal camp site down at Tucuala Lake with incredible morning views!

As a side note my brother (a 4x4 noob) rented a Gladiator Rubicon a few weeks ago and we drove together on a moderate forest road so he could compare. He opted for the Jeep because "the Lexus didn't feel like 4-wheeling". Too easy and smooth 😂. I was doing 20-25 mph in areas the Jeep could only manage 10-15mph without bashing the occupants to death.
