I guess it sharing time guys. My 13 year career/job with Vanguard came to an end recently. It has been expected for a while so I'm not trolling for a pity party. It's just time to move on.:meh:

I've not been in the job market for 13 years and job searches have changed considerably. Namely, the internet happened. I'm not at all familiar with the job search sites and there seems to be some serious information overload. I'd love to hear from some people with recent experience with job searches. What sites are good, what should be avoided, how should security be handled when posting resumes online, etc? Any references, thoughts, or ideas would also be welcome.

In the meantime, unemployment doesn't quite cut it. I'm in good shape for a few months, then things will get tight. If you guys have any thoughts on ways to pick up some extra walk around cash, I'm all ears.:hmm:

Thanks.

sorry to hear, Rob :frown:

What is it you do (or would like to do) Rob?

I wish I had something to offer for advice. I haven't looked for a job since 2003, I have changed companies in that period, but my current job found me instead of me finding it. The wife is currently searching as well, she has been laid off for just over 13 months now and it finding it VERY difficult to even get interviews. I know what you mean about things getting tough though, we are fortunate that I have a decent income, but we are starting to get concerned after spending a lot of savings over the last year.

The biggest thing I see in my wife right now is that it seems very hard to stay optimistic during the job search. Don't let things get you down, if you can avoid it.

Sorry to hear that, Rob. Best of luck for the search!

Rob, Craigslist has seem to become the big job market listing (at least locally). I just heard (and I agree) that if you see a job you really like, drive down an show up in person...it makes a big difference to the employer.

Good luck Rob!

x2 what murf says. I found my last 2 good techs on Craigslist. There's a lot of good stuff there. Networking works too. What do you want / do? Maybe someone here knows someone who knows someone...

We have done all our hiring on Craigslist....however it is evolving because the now charge employers to advertise on Craigslist which it being free is why it was so popular.

Sorry to hear about that Rob. I offer best wishes for luck but no advice...

Time to sell the 80... There's a guy with some cash a few posts down.

:flipoff2:

im sure it will be easy for you to get a new job, what, with your charming personality and sense of humor. You're a regular people person.:flipoff2: Im sure you'll find something soon. Seriously Rob, good luck with the search, and if you ever need a meal, the kids would love to have a lunch guest, you do like PBJ's right?:)

A couple of you have asked about my experience and/or what I would like to do. That’s a pretty complex question. First, my experience. Vanguard is a mutual fund company and I was a registered representative (FINRA 6 & 63). Under this heading I held many hats.
My initial position was customer service, transactions, investment information/advice and web support. I moved on to a senior position where I helped mentor new associates handled discrepancies for teammates monitored phone calls and provided feedback and supervised temps and new hires as needed.
I moved on to the retirement department were I performed the majority of my previous functions and in addition acted as technical expert for all types of IRA accounts. We were also the primary asset gathering department for retirement account transfers.
My final position was in a problem resolution department. Here I was responsible for correcting all clerical and monetary errors on taxable and retirement accounts. Trending and reporting the source of the error and rebuilding the client relationship.
As for the future, I need to do some exploring. I have cannot rule out returning to the investment industry due to my considerable expertise. But, I do have significant reservations. IMO, this industry has some severe ethics issues, especially on the sales end. The back office and service roles have little opportunity without relocating to places I never wish to live.:hillbilly:
Ideally, I would love to apply my skills in another industry that can provide me with additional, valuable experience. Something like technical support comes to mind. I don’t know if that is feasible:meh:, especially in this economy, but those are my thoughts at this time.:hmm:

If I post here does that mean I get cash?

Noo dummy.....I'm the one who needs money. You have to pay me to post in my thread. Fawking teachers are so clueless with money.:flipoff2:

Wrong color, dickhead.:flipoff2:
The Taco would go on the block long before the 80 and a bunch of things will be sold off before that's even a consideration.:meh:

Sorry to hear the bad news...

"IMO, this industry has some severe ethics issues, especially on the sales end........."

I had thought / hoped Vanguard was one of the best of the bunch. What's your opinion, generally? They push the highest profit funds to naive consumers?

In my opinion Vanguard is one of a very few who's focus is on the customer. Vanguard is not publicly owned and doesn't have a need to earn corporate profits.
This is why I'm leery of staying in the industry. That constant conflict between commissions, profits and investor returns far to often leads to some shady practices.

IMO, Vanguard has its priorities straight.
