*Moderators, please feel free to move if I’ve posted this in the wrong place.

I am looking for a 1972 Land Cruiser that once belonged to my grandfather, a WW2 vet, that has sentimental value in our family. In a long-shot attempt I’m posting this in an effort that someone might know information regarding its whereabouts. The VIN number is FJ40114392 and it was sold by my cousin in Reno, NV in the late 1990’s.

I’ve tried various online tools such as pulling a carfax to get an idea of where it was last registered, etc, but given the VIN is only 10 digits and not 17 like modern vehicles, these services don’t work. Again, this is a long shot, but worth asking the community. Any help our guidance of suggestions on how to track it down would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Jeff

Here's 22 pages to look at. Not every owner replies to the linked thread below. You might search this site with the vin # too.

Hey all - OP Jeff is my cousin and I'm the one who sold this FJ40 in 1997. Recent search update is that the latest registration I can find was in Duluth, MN in 2010. Not sure if that helps ring any bells. I reached out to @alkarich by DM, who I understand is in Duluth - again a long-shot. Anyway - great to be on the forum. If we can't find the family vehicle, I'll have to look into purchasing another '72 anyway :)

Post up some pictures of it, if you have any.

Got the PM.
Good news and bad news.

The good news is I do know the 40 you’re looking for.
I was there in Reno when my friend purchased it in 1997 from Eldon. It spent the next year in Idaho, then to Duluth.

The bad news is that I spoke to him after getting the PM and turns out he sold it last summer.
Someone local bought it to flip. He believes it was sold to someone in Montana.
Unfortunately he didn’t keep the contact info of the local buyer.

Hope this helps.
If I get some more information I’ll definitely pass it on.

There's a bunch of active Cruiserheads here in Bozeman. If you post up something in the 406 Cruisers Clubhouse forum, you might find the current owner, or someone who knows the rig. You could check with Overland Cruisers here in town too in case they've seen the rig for repair/resto work. Good luck.
