who cares just repaint if it falls off...

Well, if you want to go through the whole operation again good for you! Most people only want to fix something once - the right way.

BBQ - I'm repainting 5 steel wheels right now. I used a sanding pad (I think it was scotchbrite but I'm not sure) and it took the sheen off nicely. I also used 150 grit in some places where the old paint was rough and chipping. My wheels are for a trail truck so I wasn't too worried about looks. I mainly wanted the paint to stick well. Once I sanded I blew the dust off with a compressor and then cleaned with lacquer thinner for some and alcohol for others. I should probably pick a good cleaner and stick with it.
