Schrödinger's Truck -- hypothetically, a Middle East HZJ105

It's settled then. I'm going to ask ChatGPT what to do with everything I find to fix on this truck.

My man went down to Abu Dhabi with a flatbed to bring it to the shop. Looks like it really could be real!

So I was minding my own business and I happened to talk to a friend who knew about how much I like 105s and he sent me some photos:

Not sure about the mileage but I have to say the the photos of the underside are consistent with a low mileage truck, given that there is no evidence of overspray of frame paint
She is a beaut and very difficult to find in that combo

Long story short I decided to take a chance and buy it, primarily because it has a FEB 1999 manufacturing date. My first 105, Missus White is a 2007 so it has to live in Canada until 2032, my second, Mister Blue, is a 2003 so it is going to serve as my daily for as long as I am resident in Dubai. I retire at the end of the month so I will finally have the time and opportunity to really explore the region.

This new one will get my standard treatment of new anything that ages, like the alloy outlet for the engine's cooling system, probably a new custom radiator, birf seals, all the hoses and bushings, etc. and then it will go immediately to my home in Florida where @cruisermatt will have a chance to render judgment.

The car has a few curiosities, like the fridge, which is not too uncomon.

A very unusual roof rack, which I have never seen before, but it does not look objectionable.

It looks a like it might be professionally made. Not sure, but it looks ok. Sand blast and powder coat and it will be fine. Thinking to do black rather than white, just for the contrast. I like that it is at the back so wind noise should be better than the rack on my Omani diesel 80.

The seats seem to have been covered since new or are at least in much better shape than one would expect.

The roof rack is typical of locally made ones often seen in kuwait and around the middle east

Looks super clean! From my experience with Land Cruisers from that part of the world, spend some time going through the electrics, and of course, all rubber due to the super dry climate. And please keep sharing pictures!

Hi Exiled, thanks for the kind words. 'Clean' is not a word that comes to mind with this truck. The drivetrain looks good. But the body, exterior and interior are pretty rough. There is work ahead of us on this truck. I just went and saw another project today, the Holy Truck, an 80 with a very rough background, and was thinking that Shrodinger's Truck needs the same level of work.

Just for fun, here is a little song about the data plate issue.

We are doing our best to get him into shape. This morning Schrodinger's Truck went for a steambath and a rubdown.

He came back looking better. Still bearing scars from a life in the wilds of Yeman

John we you need to figure out how to rotate the cell phone sideways when you film with it. I like the editing though. Too much free time in your retirement?

I can't take credit. This was done by a friend of mine. And as one of the denizens of one of my whatsapp groups put it:

"A Tarantino Bollywood movie about a sewing machine"

Which is quite accurate from several different perspectives.

My son and I did another manual driving lesson in the desert preserve where we saw some interesting animals:

Then we dropped by the garage for another quick look at Schrodinger's Truck.

First time that Mr. Blue and Schrodinger were side by side:

Had my first first-hand look under Schrodinger's:

Looks pretty ok. I did note some more damage, this time to the right side of the rear door. It is pushed in a bit and does not unlock. Lots of work to do on Schrodinger's Truck.

Oh, and in the middle of this my son drove Mr. Blue on the highway for the first time! And had no issues whatsoever!

We took Mr. Blue to Sharjah this morning. I was looking for an electric motor for the seat of a 1999 Prado owned by a friend of mine. Rough day. Really Really hot.

Mr. Blue, the 105 caught the first damage on his brand-new front bumper.

People moving at a fraction of a mile an hour in the most densely crowded part of Sharjah. A guy in a Ford pickup truck misjudged and tried to drive around Mr Blue, who was fully stopped and had been for a while. He caught my bumper on his truck just behind the driver's door. And of course he gave me a dumb apologetic smile.

But on the positive side I had my older boy with me and he got to see what Sharjah really like. And, because I deliberately chose not to paint the new bumper should be trivia to clean it up with some fine scotcbrite. I am a big fan of unpainted OEM bumpers.

Couple of other sights:

So today we got into Schrodinger's Truck a bit more. And the guys found some more surprises.

I mentioned that the car pulled strongly to the left. Here's the right front axle.
1720281249692.jpeg

Guess what? The caliper was not even connected. Not sure how any of the brakes worked with that busted hose going to the right front caliper!
1720281314129.jpeg

Luckily there is an early LX470 parts car available to donate its caliper and hose. And the owner of the garage kindly decided to gift me the locking hubs that were on the LX, which I greatly appreciated.
1720281445208.jpeg

The door of Schrodinger's Truck had been left open overnight, draining the battery and we tried to jump start from Mister Blue without success. Turned out that we were operating under a bad theory. The actual problem was a melted battery terminal.

1720281682232.jpeg

I had looked at it when we were trying to jump the truck, but I did not notice it. It was mid-afternoon and we were outdoors and it was bloody hot. Thankfully the guys figured it out. And again the LX470 donated the replacement part. And the truck started right up.

Next was the test of the repaired brakes.

And now the guys are going to try, somewhat optimistically in my view, to get Schrodinger's Truck through the Road and Transport Authority's inspection, which is similar to what we see in Virginia for the annual safety inspection.

1720282306566.jpeg

But first about 50 bucks worth of diesel (and yes it is diesel) into the two tanks

So we shall see what we shall see.

Sounds like an occasion for a song!
