On OBD1, the code(s) can be read by shorting TE1 and E1 in the diagnostic box on the firewall, and counting the flashes of the CEL. The Toyota SST for this is a small paper clip, bent into a U shape. :hillbilly:

Wouldn't a 97 have OBD2?

Even if Non-USA?

No, attached is mine

When you put the jumper in, you will get a repeating pattern on the flashing light. Long, short, etc...Just watch until you see the pattern and decode it using the FSM.

How can I decode the number of flashes

Insert the jumper, turn the key to run, without starting the motor, the CEL should blink. Say blink, blink, pause. blink, longer pause, would be code 21. If there is more than one, they follow in sequence, it will continue to repeat as long as the key is on.

Not sure if this includes all of the ones for a 97 or not, but should be a start.

If you get a chance, what is the PN of your ECU?
