Johnny, what ESC are you using? Is it by chance an Axial AE-1? If so, you can't get around the double tap. If you upgrade to the AE-2 you lose that annoying feature.

I'm using the XL-5:

Yeah the controls can be a bit maddening at times. I have no issue going from Fwd to Rev, and I've disabled ABS on both of my profiles on the FlySky. I had Nick set up the FS for my RC4WD TF2 2-speed transmission, it was driving me nuts - and took him <10 mins.

Do you know of a command chart / guide for the flashed firmware?

Johnny I'm not sure if that is a function of the xl-5 a traxxis esc I believe or the fly sky. Hopefully nick can tune it out with controller as you will want instant access to reverse.

Also as to batteries I usually only get 15-20 min out of a pack and there are a few factors that come into play

Non-technical breakdown
Mah or how much juice in the cells
C rating -- how fast it can dump the juice

Those batteries are small. 1000 mah so your starting 20% the size that joe mentioned. Also they have a high c rating for more punch at the expense of less run time.

Size becomes an issue in the crawlers vs scalers as there is little to no room left. Why I run 850/1000/1300 mah packs. I ordered a 5000 as a newb and its hilariously large :/

My 850 40c batt may get 15
My 1300 25c batt almost twice thatthat

Johnny, That ESC is not meant for a crawler. It is an entry level Traxxas ESC that they use in their 2WD basher trucks. It does not have a drag brake which IMO is essential for a crawler and it requires the double tap to reverse. No amount of Flysky programming is going to be able to add a drag brake or overcome the double tap issue with that ESC. There are tons of ESC's out there that are much better suited for what you want to do. I use the Axial AE-2. It may not be the best but it works fine for our uses. It has the double tap delete function and it has a drag brake. Our AE-2's have been dunked and generally beat to hell and they have never once given me trouble. There are other good ESC's as well. Just look around.

Are matched batteries still a big thing? When I was racing the RC10 back in the late 80s matched batteries were a huge thing. My buddy that owned the hobby shop bought a battery machine that cycled them and gave you readings. We bought batteries in bulk, matched them out, took the cream off the top and then sold off the rest. Lots of time invested. Even lower rated matched packs performed longer than higher rated unmatched packs. Another thing we did was to drain the batteries after each run before re charging. I made up little 4 12V bulb units that would plug into the pack and drain the rest of the juice.

Thanks for the advice guys!! It would take me forever to learn what you're typing out in a couple of hours.

I'll read around and have a new ESC installed by the weekend :D

Sorry bout that man. I had no idea what they were but knew they were new in the box when I added deans. Part of my giant box O parts purchase a while back.

Maybe look on RCcrawlers.com and find one in classifieds. Or post yours up for sale too. I think you have to register to use classified section. The ncrc crawler forum is a good one to check too

Mamba max pro is a bad ass esc but 100 bux
I like my tekin a lot and have one not responding you could attempt to warranty if you want but no receipts.

Ill see if Alex has an extra for sale but thinking he dunked his last one in linville river. Doh

You have no reason to apologize buddy!! As far as I'm concerned it was a "starter kit" and I'm definitely addicted :D

New ESC ordered and should be here tomorrow.

So the fall brown Mtn trip planning may need to incorporate a lil crawl comp :) mini Moab awaits us on the banks of Wilson creek scenic gorge

Now get some paint on that bug so we can see the carnage better :D

And keep your eye out for office parks with water features

There's alot of oneupsmanship with regard to ESC's. Most offer features that you don't really need that cost more $. You can spend alot on one or a little. What you pay a premium for are things like small size, higher power rating, lipo capable with cutoff, programmable drag brake and internal BEC. Some good ones for a crawler are: Tekin FXR, Novak Rooster and Castle Sidewinder. As I said, I use the Axial AE-2 which is essentially a dumbed-down Castle Sidewinder.

Yup, agreed, same seems to go with motors. I bought a couple of motors for $12 each, which was nice.

Ordered the AE-2 through Amazon with some gift cards. Should be here tomorrow, weather permitting.

That's a great list; think ive had each of those... The fxr being my favorite. I forgot about the similarities in sidewinder and ae-2

Stan I'm not sure about the balancing of individual cells and how crucial it is for performance. I suspect there is still some merit to it helpin the lifetime of the cells even with lipos as The charger I have has a balancer lead as well for even cell charging.

I used to have an RC10 as well years ago and would pilfer my pops bin of warranties power tool batteries and go through em making new 6pack nicd batteries.

Johnny, If you haven't done this yet, you should check out http://www.rc-recycler.com/. Unlike most hobby stores that sell mostly Traxxas stuff, this place is more Axial oriented. Lots of new and gently used parts for great prices and free shipping. I have bought a couple of things from them over the years with no issues. Even better for you, they are physically located in Durham! You can call and set it up to go pick up your items in person. Heck, they might even let you snoop around the place.

If I ran anything other than my bug body, I'd totally build a custom tube buggy body.

Re rc-recycler, their prices are criminal. They buy kits, tear them down and part them out - literally. If you show up on their doorstep with CASH you might talk them down 15% or so, then their prices verge on reasonable (I got a finished Mojave body, complete, for $20 less than retail, no shipping or tax). For something you don't need warranty on, they are ok, but I wouldn't look at them for electronics.

I will prove to you the spec war, as with most everything else, is way overrated w/ RC's. Sidewinder3 ($60, waterproof), 2S, 35T, and 1.9's and I'll walk all over and around you! j/k But we do need to get together. While everyone else is going bigger/faster/more powerful, my new obsession is my TF2 w/ 1.5's; and now my modded SCX10 seems like a crazy tricked-out rig............

I bought a new Wraith transmission from rc-recycler and also an AE-2 ESC. Both were new take-offs. This was a couple of years ago. I thought their prices were fair, all things considered. I like that they are not Traxxas heavy like most local hobby stores and for someone who runs Axials and lives in the same town as this place, it seems like a good match...especially if you just gotta' have that part today. Of course, like anything...shop around. I'm sure there are better deals out there.

@jfz80 Hey man, It just hit me that I threw you under the bus regarding that XL-5 ESC. Sorry man! I didn't think about who sold Johnny his stuff. I was just trying to help him out. The XL-5 is a solid ESC. Nothing wrong with it...just not the best for crawling. My intentions on this or any other thread I post on are good. If I can help someone out, I try. I'm not looking to step on anybody's toes or hurt any feelings.

Hey no worries at all man. Not an issue; best Johnny knows what he has as he pretty much collected all that was left in the parts bin for this build. A lot of new or unused by me. I blame these dang forum environments :) like earlier in this thread I didn't mean to challenge your tread ID, I thought those were panther tires only cause I ran em so long and thought that's what went his way. Wasn't trying to one up anyone's rc knowledge cause mine has come and faded away.... This thread is a good rejuvenator for me too.

The xl5 was odd that it did exhibit a drag brake and it was adjustable with his flysky but the safety pause for reverse makes sense if its from a 2wd speed machine.
