Currently in the middle of a 5.7 SBC swap into my 1988 FJ62. We will be running a 700R4 GM Transmission. I was planning on purchasing a VSS sensor adapter from Jags that Run that would allow us to attach the GM TBI wiring harness to the Toyota transfer case sensor, however the sensor is currently on back order from Jags and will more than likely be months before any are available.

I am currently looking for another option.

I have read that Jim @ Downy Off Road once made an adapter, but I think they may no longer be available. I have also seen an adapter available from Marlin Off Road, but this is a four pulse, I need a 2 pulse.

I also have been looking on the Advanced Adapter site, They have some stuff available but their descriptions / directions are pretty lacking so I am not sure. There is spot in the adapter that I think is for a VSS sensor, but again not 100% sure due to questionable instructions. 716071 : GM VSS SENSOR | Advance Adapters Does this screw into their adapter? If so it may work.

Any general input would be helpful, don't really want to wait months to get the project done.

Here are a few pics of our test fit of the engine. Having the motor mounts welded this week and hope to start final install this weekend.

With Advanced Adapters I have heard it is best to just call them and talk with their guys. Other options would be to message guys like Georg @ Valley Hybrid, NCFJ, Torfab, ACC and the like to see if they have any recommendations.

Downey is definitely not a viable option unless you find a used one as I do not believe anyone picked up his intellectual property when he went out of business.

Put up some info on your build when you get a chance. Seems like you are pretty far into it and looks like you completely rebuilt that 5.7 TBI.

I have an email into Advanced. Digging on their site a little bit there is a lot of good info. Hopefully I will talk to them today.

I have been posting some build pictures on this thread.

thinking about doing a separate one once we are done.

Thanks

I thought there was a VSS relocation spot on the AA adapter. I forget where I read that but when I order mine, that's what my plan was, to use the new location with original sensor.

you should call Marlin about theirs too... they might have some intel on 4 pulse vs. 2 pulse. someone recently posted to the TLC facebook page about an Isuzu Trooper VSS that fits but says it is also 4 pulse. He was going to use it for a 350 TBI motor in an FJ40:

maybe someone else around here can speak on the technical aspects of 2 vs. 4 pulse VSS? that seems to be the question. i didn't find AA all that helpful with regard to anything outside their product line.

That is correct. At least for the 4L60e and other auto trans, the VSS sensor port is in the adapter. If trying to get the speedo to work off this sensor you may need to use a converter like the one Slee sells or the one Dakota Digital makes. In my 80 it was the Marks 4wd converter that was used to get the VSS to work with the stock speedo.

Cheers

why not get the actual gm VSS sensor from GM that matches your year model / transmission / setup and then go from there? The VSS mount from downy mounted on the back of the transfercase. I too understand that there is a port on the AA adapter. Why would the GM VSS sensor not work?

While I understand you can't buy the downy item anymore..... I use it and the VSS that matches my engine...99 yr model 5.7 (pick your flavor of vehicle..suv or pickup). Could you not just use teh sensor say off a 92 or whatever year model 5.7 TBI engine you have (model of vehicle).

This is the plug in question. It is my understanding that his is lined up with the reluctor ring on the transmission shaft on the inside of adapter. seen here.

What VSS sensor do I plug into it?

I have got the original that came out of the tail shaft of the transmission. Just got to figure out where to put it. :bang:

ok...if the old 5.7 tbi VSS does not adapt to the AA adapter that may be your problem (just the physical size issue) not the signal or other issue. I guess I was lucky in that the downy adapter accepts the GM VSS sensor that the 5.7 vortec uses. You'll have to get on the phone with the great people at AA to see what they suggest. I'm not sure what the differences are between year models on the GM stuff but I do know there were some differences in the output signal.

I'm not sure but you might want to surf around on some of the web sites of the people who make the engine swap harnesses...like painless, howell and pacific to see what they recommend when setting up a 5.7 vortec for VSS signal output, of which would work with the given port on the AA adapter...whatever size thread/hole that is.

you might also call dakota digital....I see on some other forums where guys have made their stuff work....

xxfullsailxx- I recall on your thread that you installed a Walker crossover pipe. Do you have a part number or it's application? Thanks.

Get that Chevy crap out from under that beautiful Mopar air cleaner! :flipoff2:

the crossover pipe is from a late 60's chevy pick up...

i may have to swap my JTR speed sensor with that AC Delco one into the AA adapter. that's a much cleaner solution and at this point, i'm not sure why i went with the JTR one? that seemed to be the solution everyone agreed on when i did my swap.

Most of my reading has pointed to JTR adapter as well. Not sure why the GM sensor is not talked about more. I picked up the sensor today at lunch. Still not 100% convinced it will work. My concern in the amount of space between the sensor and the reluctor ring. Hope we got it lined up correctly.

well, if i get to it before you have this thing running, i will let you know what i find...

is the sensor adjustable or does it just seat once the threads are tightened? and did AA have anything to say about spacing? i can't imaging it takes much to pick up a signal...

I know we have different adapters...etc. The downy istructions talke about some various measurements to get the sensor in the right postion. I simply bottomed the VSS GM sensor and then backed off just a hair and then tested to make sure I had no interference...been running about 3 years like that.
