I need to remove all the interior paint (no top) on the 40 I just bought- a lot of it is gone already but there are still several colors left, LOL! I'm planning to spray it with Rhino Liner as mine is a ranch/hunting vehicle and the Rhino Liner will make for easy cleaning. However, I'm DREADING trying to hand-sand or wire brush the interior. So, I thought I'd rent a sand blaster for a day; but I've never used one before.

Has anyone had any experience with them that can give me some pointers? I heard that there are some medias- maybe walnut shells, plastic or even baking soda- that will work and not require as much 'taping off.' Is this true and, if so, what works best?

Any help or advice I can get would be MOST appreciated!

Thanks!

If you can afford it, have it done. It is extremely messy and if you have neighbors they will not be impressed with the mess. :-)

If you still want to do it:
Do you have an area large enough to do it?
Is your compressor up to the task? Ideally you will need 70-90 psi @ 10-15CFM for a syphon blaster or 90-120 psi @ 9-15 CFM for a pressurized pot blaster. I personally have a small oiless Craftsman 5 hp compressor with a 30 gallon tank and a small 40 lb pressurized blasting pot for small projects on the Cruiser. It's horribly under powered but it works. I have done 1/2 my frame with it!

Do you have the proper safety gear? You will need a hood, gloves, respirator.

You can use playground sand (very cheap:$3.00 a 40lb bag) to blast with but the respirator is a must! Other blast media are more expenvie by far.

HTH's!

Do a search if you can, there was just a really good thread about sandblasting a week or two ago in this section. We were all in about the same boat, us doing it versus someone else.. Hate to say it but I am leaning towards someone else also..

What is the typical cost of having someone else do it?

i am a blaster

I pay somebody to do it ... it is messy and all the crap involved is annoying.

However, I am not sure which is worst... dealing with a Sandblaster or the actual sandbalaster

I resemble that remark:flipoff2:

LOL, I blasted my frame, body and all the parts for my cruiser with a Sears brand syphon blaster, my compressor put out a 110 PSI. I the Lowe's brand play sand which worked fine, but I'd never do it again. In the heat of summer sand blasting; let just say it sucked. When we tore my buddies down to the frame we took the frame, body, and parts on a trailer and the guy blasted everything for $200 bucks. It made me sick, I spent that just for the sand and blaster and could have saved myself days/hours of time out of the heat. Lessons learned, but it did come out perfect between sandblasting and getting the ruff spots off the frame with a wire wheel. Thats what these forums are all about, our lost is someone's gain. I wish I would have had this advice back then, but then again there was no such thing as a computer forum then.:crybaby:

Pay someone

Let's get down to the nitty gritty, did the home blasters cause problems with the sheet metal... lots of prime, sand, re-prime, to smooth it back out? If no/or/so, with what for media and pressure?

I used a 250cu ingersol rand compressor to do thishttps://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=99015

Personally, I would pay someone to do it, make sure your tub is stripped, don't try any short cuts. I would like to know what kind of shape it is in.

I would use silica sand(our ins will not cover us) because it leaves a nice pitted manageable surface. If you want to spend more cash use aluminum oxide media.

I would charge a min of $50 then $25/hr. Materials are the persons resp. I would only give this deal to mudders.

I will post up a before and after pic of my tub in about a week , week and half. I am putting mine on a buckroseau rotisierre, and plan on blasting the living crap out of it.

The pics on my thread took me 20 min. I am not happy with the profile as I used a media called amberblast, live and learn. I have to redo all of my painted parts.
Good luck:beer::beer:

Thanks for the advice guys- I'm not sure if I can find someone to sandblast my LC much less afford it but I'm going to look into it. If I DO do it myself, it'll be out at our ranch where my LC lives- we've got plenty of barn space and 13,000 acres around them so I'm not to worried about finding a convenient place to do it. It's not street legal at the moment and I have to file for a lost title and all that if I want to register it- it's basically just a ranch vehicle so I'm not sure if I'll even bother with titling it, for now- which makes getting it to someone to do it for me ANOTHER hassle. I had been hoping to rent a sandblaster and clean it up enough to roll on some sort of Rhino-liner type coating on the inside, floors and sides.

Well, I'll look into it when I'm down there this weekend. Thanks y'all!

Nick
