Hello gals and guys. Long time no post. Due to an unfortunate wreck by my uncle.... Is there anything I could use from a Dodge Ram 1500. Auto with the 360 stump puller engine. Has tranny cooler, disc brakes, etc. I saw Cummins questions in the engine swap FAQ but nothing on gas engines from Dodge. It was hit in the front left pulling into traffic. Knocked everything over the right several inches, but still runs except the fans has dug into the shroud. We don't think the truck is worth fixing as no collision insurance. Any ideas? If not could anyone use any parts for their own trucks. We thought about looking for a good body with a blown engine to swap ours over too also.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if I have just missed a huge section on why you cannot swap a Dodge engine into an FJ40. Or why you wouldn't want to. Engine has about 100k miles. But runs like a top.

Howdy! Check with Advanced Adapters. They probably offer adapters to plant that into an FJ 40. John

Thx John. I thought to look there as I am coming from a stock 74. No 350 conversion to start with. I am looking for the dreaded "it can be done, but LOTS of mods required" to disway me. Or, "I did it and its not bad..." that would work too.

How bout the old "Anything can be done- but WHY?" question. I understand cheap- but you're going to be forever looking for parts that aren't common. Better to sell the 360 to some poor unsuspecting fool, take the proceeds and do something stronger and more reliable.

My $.02.

Luke

Yup. That's what I am looking for. A reason not to take a free engine and tranny and curse the rest of my days.:bang:

Stronger and more reliable? There's nothing wrong with the 360. And the 727 transmission is one of the toughest ever made. There's no drawback to running this combo, other than maybe having to "go where no mudder has gone before" and designing the install from scratch.

F'n love the 360. Rather have that than a 350. Put 250k on one and never did anything to it.

No harder than any other swap.

Sounds like I am getting some why not's. Ok. So i'll check with AA about adapter. Speaking of, should I keep the 3-spd tranfer from the f or would something else be better?
Since this is my only uncle, and he doesn't need the money.... any ideas what a fair amount to offer him instead if just excepting it free would be. Given it has 100k on the clock. Believe it is a 99.
It is not 4WD so would I even bother with the rear axle?
How about brake booster and discs?
Would it have had a saginaw PS? How would I check?

Brian- as far as "from scratch" should I assume no different than first converting to v8 from F? As far as where to put engine mounts? Headers vs huggers? Or should I did deeper? Surely the block and accessory design should fit in that huge engine bay. Depending on how my front fenders clean up, I am leaning towards tubes and skins anyway.

Thks

I wonder if Randy ( the guy that works with the vortecs down here in TX could give some pointers? Gonna try to find his email.

Howdy! Just for giggles, I dug out my old, and I do mean old, copy of AA catalogs. They did not offer any goodies for a Mopar conversion. Might have a had time hooking up that 727 to a Toyota transfer case. Could be pretty hard to find a suitable transfer that will mate up and still have front and rear drops on the right side, as most/all Mopar-Jeep rigs have a centered rear diff to go with all their 2wd options. The cost/labor of swapping in a centered-diff rear axle may offset the bargain of getting this setup for free. I think you should take this setup and offer it to the Jeep market for someone who wants to upgrade his old I-6 into a bigger engine. THAT would be an easy swap. Split the profits with your uncle, and your both way ahead. John

Thanks Inkpot. I knew there would be something that would make this less than standard. Good idea with the Jeep thing, I have had a few TJ's myself. I guess I bought the FJ for something to cost a little more money to fix up. :o

Wasn't there a NV4500 application for Dodge? I believe there is an adapter from the 5-speed to a split case (FJ60). 360+NV4500+split case?
