rust converter

I am using por 15 and for all the talk of a lot of prep I have had no problems with it it seems it would stick without the metal prep too. I was pretty lucky on rust but I have some spots. I wire wheeled it or used a 3M stripping wheel (these are great) then covered it with naval jelly which is pretty cheap. I let it dry then go back and grind off the results. The residue and converted rust come off way easier than just going at the rust otherwise. This has worked pretty well for me since I am going to bare metal anyway. Most of the pits come up shiny metal or black oxide.

If I weren't going to bare metal anyway I'd probably try one of the other products with less prep.

Anyone use a product 5 or 10 years ago that is still going strong?

I figure you can add a lot of life just by removing rust and painting over but of course we all want that feeling that we have made it bullet proof!:bounce:

i used it about 20 years ago and was very pleased with it. i also used their zinc plating kit and was pleased with that too. took a midwestern (completely rusted crappy light) fj40 marker light and used rust encapsulator and the zinc plate and it turned out looking like new (only really pockmarked from the rust).

I have used a product called Extend and it worked great, but you had to really follow the directions... like most of these products. you can get it at Home Depot too.

what about "Rust Destroyer". It's allegedly a rust stopper / inhibitor / primer. I've used it for a while and seems to work great as a rust primer. A bit thick (mine may be old) so if brushed it's not perfectly smooth but easy to sand. Very tacky apparently, doesn't seem to come off. And paint adheres well to it. Available at Home Depot as well. (Apparently the only rust inhibitor they had locally when I looked last, besides rustoleum.)

Anybody has long term experience with it?

I used it on a utility trailer that is about 20 years old. Metal was rusty. I took the scale off with a wire brush, applied Jasco Metal Prep (phosphoric acid), used the Rust encapsulator, and then sprayed it with Rustoleum. That was about 5 years ago and the only places that have rust now are placed where it was scratched down to the bare metal. No "breakthrough" rust. It was easy to apply.

Permatex. Comes in a spray at NAPA for like $6

Follow the instructions, timing is everything...

Spray on light and a few coats in a 5min time frame. Wait about 10min, wait to see the blackness, as soon as it is all black, top coat with primer. Then paint over that.
