I’ve recently purchased an 01’ LX470 and although very clean frame, there’s still SOME rust of course. I’ve been reading through lots of threads on which rust converters are best, the pros and cons of fluid film vs woolwax, which is all helpful.

But the one thing I’m still unclear about (and maybe this is a stupid question) is whether it would be prudent to use a rust converter and THEN use fluidfilm or woolwax, or if it’s fine to just go straight ahead with the FF/WW. If it was a brand new car I’d obvious just go straight to FF/WW, but if I just use that now without a rust converter am I locking in rust and not doing myself any favors?

The idea of fluid film is to not trap moisture like paint or old fashioned undercoatings do if you apply them directly to rust. I haven't tried it so I don't know how well it works though. Just plain oil works just as well, but will need reapplying more often. That's what I do on all my vehicles, the local shop charges 70€ for spraying and it needs to be done approximately once every two years. If you use rust converter I'd put some paint over the converted areas before applying fluid film or oil, just to get an additional layer of protection.

I'm planning on using this on my 40, when the body comes off later next month.

It's spendy, but I do not want to do this job twice, and I have other sheetmetal that needs it.

I'd rather use Corroless, but I can't find it in the states.
