Hey,

Last weekend I purchased an 08 LX570 with 130,000 miles. It was driven the entire week without issue. A few moments ago, I backed out of my driveway, shifted into drive, and the idle of the engine became very rough. There was no power to the accelerator peddle and shortly thereafter the engine shut off. An attempt to turn the vehicle on yielded similar results; rough idle followed by the engine shutting off within 10-15 seconds. The check engine light comes on as the engine shuts off and unfortunately I sold my code reader along with my 98 Land Cruiser a few years ago. The Lexus is currently residing in front of my neighbors house. I am less than pleased with the current situation.

Now for the real time help. What do I do right now? Do I have it towed to a Lexus dealership? Do I have it towed to an independent mechanic who specializes in Lexus'? Do I contact the dealership I bought it now? Or should I wait until after the vehicle has been diagnosed? The dealership in question is not a Lexus dealership and is located 75 miles away from my house. Does anyone know whats wrong with it?

Any and all help is appreciated. I wish this wasn't my first post about this vehicle.

Contact the dealer ASAP.

Be polite, but make sure they know this is their deal, not yours. Have them recommend a place to take it (a dealer).

After the work is done, try to get them to pay. If they balk, go higher in the chain of command.

I had a bad dealer experience as well recently. Catch more bees with honey, but make it known you are upset. Can you get to an AutoZone yet tonight for a free OBD Scan?

Forget the gauge for a minute since its new to you and simple first - gas recently? Stock range with reserve is..320-50ish to empty? I don't remember exactly.

If so, contact the selling dealership first thing as siggested above. There is no reason yet to be anything but polite. If it has been faultless for the week then let's assume first that its unfamiliar to them as well. Its unlikely they have much experience or mileage with it from auction to lot. Do you have all the maint records handy?

Its not easy to hide the conditions you've described.

Tell us where you are. I am in Mountain View and you are more than welcome to grab my ODBII reader.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for the quick responses. I contacted the dealership and the course of action between us will be determined after the vehicle is diagnosed in the morning. In the meantime, the LX has been towed to the local Lexus dealership.

I have the maintenance records and the vehicle is up-to-date. Only overdue item is an AHC fluid change which I've read conflicting reports on whether it is necessary or not.

The thought of fuel did cross my mind and I would be incredibly embarrassed (and relieved - probably a 50/50 split between the two emotions) if that ends up being the case. The vehicle had a little over an 1/8 of a tank left when this occurred which leads me to believe its something else. I've taken many Toyota/Lexus products past the E line and have never run out of gas before.

I will keep you updated once I know more. Hopefully this is a small blip in a happy and long ownership experience.

My 2008 has at least 4 gallons left when on E...so if yours read 1/8th tank, I'm sure you weren't out of gas.

Turns out the issue is a bad fuel pump. Dealer just called with the diagnosis.

That's good news and an easy fix

And ... who's going to pay for the repair? :worms:

Very glad to hear that its a minor issue. I would have handled the repair myself if it wasn't for the extenuating circumstances (just purchased the vehicle, busy time at work).

I have a loaner 2016 NX200t so at least I won't have to pay that much money on gas for the next couple days.

Great question and one I'm not sure yet on how to answer. My current plan is to have it repaired, pay for it, and reach out to the original dealer with the final costs. I took MSCruisers and BookerNoe's advice and was nice on the phone. They are a reputable dealer so we'll see.

Replacing the fuel pump looks to be no easy task. According to the shop manual, the 2nd and 3rd row seats have to be taken out and the carpet pulled back in order to expose the service hole cover the fuel pump is located under. Just think of what an ordeal this would be if you had storage boxes installed back there and you were fully loaded down and on a trip.
