Post title says it all. I have my 97 Land Cruiser valve body apart and the check balls don’t match the TIS diagram. Interested to see if the paper FSM is different. Thanks!

Thanks @Tools R Us! If I read this correctly on the LC diagrams the lower valve body that has 2 rubber balls marked T100 is only for the T100. Interestingly my valve body had the one in the corner on the lower valve body.

Thanks to @breathed I verified my 97 CE had the same check ball arrangement as his different from the FSM and TIS that match:

Interesting on the differences and especially the FSM and TIS being different.
 
@Tools R Us Do you happen to have one from the 98-02 100 series? Starting to wonder if ours was updated after the FSM?
 
After doing more research on this I have not been able to identify any further information so being that my trans is newer than the diagram which was released in 95 I decided to reassemble as I found it with the exception of the TSB check ball addition carefully retorquing all 25 bolts in the valve body to 55 in/lbs.

From Exxon Mobil and Thomas Johnson from JG lubricants said the same thing about Dexron VI. Tom recommended TranSynd or Mobil Delvac with the TES-468 designation.

From the owner’s manual for the 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser:

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Fluid capacity (drain and refill),
L (qt., Imp. qt.):
Up to 1.9 (2.0, 1.7)
Fluid type:
Automatic transmission fluid D-II or DEXRON III (DEXRON II)

This indicates that any lubricant carrying Dexron II or Dexron III approval would be suitable for use. We would not recommend Mobil DEXRON-VI ATF for this application. Instead, you can consider the following:

Mobil ATF D/M
Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF (Synthetic blend)
Mobil 1 ATF (Full synthetic)

GM terminated licensing for Dexron II & III, but is still readily available. The bottles will now say something like, for early GM transmissions, not supposed to say Dexron II on the bottles, but some do.
 
Yes. I was advised to stick with a major oil company brand if going with 2 or 3 since the license expired due to no oversight anymore and the majors stand more to lose if they are caught cutting corners.
 
Installed the valve body to the transmission tonight 7 ft/lbs torque, replaced the kick down cable O-ring lubed with ATF, cleaned the FIPG off of the case, worked on getting the FIPG off of the oil pan, and discovered the pan magnets disappeared. Ugh! Real world stuff. Maybe they ended up in the shop towels that went in the trash; maybe the kids thought they were fun toys; maybe they’ll turn up.

They put that TBS check ball for a reason to soften up the shifting it was a mid 97 change and there was a recall on it
 
Cleaned the filter housing. The screen looks clean. Installed and torqued to 7 ft/lbs. Test fit the Fel-Pro gasket.

The missing magnets got me to thinking about this and I found a post where @4G63 POWER had mentioned it on Transfer case drainplug musings
I’m wondering if a magnet can be too strong effecting the solenoids and how to get the right strength?
 
So I called my Toyota dealer today to see about the magnets and they said that they don’t see them in the parts listing. He thought they come with the oil pan. So I ordered some high temperature neo magnets that are 7/8 in diameter and 3/8 tall. I’m hoping there’s enough clearance in the oil pan to work.
 
Home Depot carries various sizes and shapes of neodynium magnets
including a pack of six low profile 1/2" diameter magnets. FWIW.
 
I looked at that but was concerned about not finding any high temperature ones there.
 
Magnets arrived and fit! They are very strong.

Are you doing the valve body upgrade for firmer shifts? just curious!
 
I wanted to add the TSB check ball, turn up the line pressure for the heavy truck I’m building, use a gasket to not have to deal with cleaning FIPG off the pan or ever have it in my system, and inspect the magnets in the pan.

On another note, I discovered a negative battery terminal cover fits perfectly over the transmission dipstick as a temporary cover.

Thinking about using a fumoto drain valve for easy oil analysis and picking a fluid. I like the Transynd fluid but not sure I can buy it in my town.
