Congrats on getting over the "Jeep Thing" and into the 80 thing. I grew up with a green 40 and never looked back. My Dad and bro had the green 40 while I had a Desert Baja VW. The VW was tough, but nothing like the LC! The LC pulled me out often. The buggy was fun, but nothing close to sturdy like a LC. The Baja was fast, an off-road sports car, like a roller coaster on acid! I needed no drugs, I had driving adrenalin! But I was constantly rebuilding it as a result of crashes. I did a lot in that race car! It was fun, but it had limits. I was constantly replacing mirrors as I kept scraping them off at speed on high mountain roads at night. I would get home to find the side of the car scratched up and the mirror gone! I used up a lot of spray paint in those days! I bought mirrors in case lots at $3 each. I had to paint the sides of the car every other month.
I have been around a lot of Jeeps and other domestic 4x4's. They may be light and quick, but they lack strength. If I want to be light, I would rather drive a buggy and be pulled out of trouble by a LC. Light trucks bounce around a lot. If I wanted that, I would still be driving a VW buggy.
When I want 4wd, I need weight, not play-toys. I need a truck that is made of steel, not tin. That would be a Land Cruiser.
If I need it to be light I want a desert buggy or a rail. When I want 4WD, I need some steel under me! I don't need a Heep. I want a real truck! I love my 80! It is 6,000 pounds of real steel! It slows me down and holds me up! It grabs the dirt and gets a grip. When the road gets rough the 80 rides smooth. It is a smooth machine. It gets the job done without any problems. It rarely has any body tilt, no matter the trail conditions. It rides easily over the roughest trail conditions.
Until recent years the desert buggy has been the smoothest-running off-road vehicle known to man. With long-travel suspension, it was the smoothest thing going. But the LC 80 has surpassed it. It is a luxury off-road touring vehicle.
