This is probably a FAQ, but hopefully somebody in the forum has a ready answer.

What is Toyota's recommended max weight in a FJ40 roof rack ? These tops just seem flimsy compared to the FJ55, FJ60, etc.

I can make a fairly light AL roof rack for a few hundred dollars. But wondering if I can put a roof top tent on a FJ40.

Reviving the thread as I have the same question.

I have a set of Yakima 1A Raingutter mounts and would like to transport two kayaks on the roof of the 40. Each of the yaks weighs 60#.
Would this be acceptable? I'm guessing it would be okay but if anyone could confirm this, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

You all will be fine with what you've described. I recently carried 20 8 foot long 2x4's, and 8 8 foot long 2x6's on two generic crossbars on my 40 and had no problems whatsoever.

Additionally, we have built a roof rack for 90weight on this board to carry an RTT on his 40. Here's a link to his thread (posts with our rack aren't until the last few pages of this build thread): https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-seri...st-landcruiser-78-frame-off-resofication.html

I don't know what Toyota would call the maximum weight limit, but I can assure you that they are plenty stout (when in good condition).....

Good to hear. Looks like I'll be fine. Thanks again.

Is 90 weight's rack cut in the back so his RTT will unfold? Not sure how he is working that from the angle of his photo's.

Thanks!

Here is a thread with some good info in it - https://forum.ih8mud.com/40-55-series-tech/162442-check-out-my-rack.html.

When I built my rack, I asked the same question. Since I posted that thread, I have had probably close to 150 lbs plus the rack weight of 55 lbs for a total of over 200 lbs in it for a camping trip. It did just fine. I don't carry stuff in it all the time, but I've used it multiple times with probably 100 lbs in it with no problems. I've also got up in it (200 lbs) to unload stuff, and again, no problems. To date, there has been no problems with the gutters either.

Good luck!

IIR it is aprox 70+- per attachement or build one like mine and you can pack aprox 1000lb the last couple days I have been packing loads of 16' 2x6 and dozens of 2x4s,I packed a front end of a 60 up there for a 100 miles and much more.

Yep, it clamshells out toward the rear of the vehicle.....this shot shows how we designed the rear of the rack to accomplish that:

Basically, we took the top rail off from the last upright support back. We also aligned two of the crossbars to coincide with the mounting for the RTT.

Here's a pic from his thread showing the tent opened:

Keep in mind that there's the weight of the rack, the RTT, miscellaneous stuff and their two bodies up there when they're sleeping.....of course, that's static weight, but still it gives you an idea.....

Do you know what the weight of your rack is? Can you tell me what wall thickness tubing you used? I am in the process of developing drawings to build a copy of the GOBI rack, similar in mounting to yours. They specify "heavy wall tubing." But using 2mm (.08) wall tubing I am at 110 pounds without the expanded metal floor which would be another 50 pounds. The specification sheet from GOBI says 95 pounds. I can't see how they got all that material in at 50 pounds if the floor weighs 50. Thanks, your rack looks good.
