Ok team -

See pics. PO covered this up with his kids Crayola finger paint (or something) and now thats failing and showing rust.

I've received a quote from the locally best priced collision repair shop, and they are wanting $1200 for the job. Gulp.

I'm guessing I can get that down by $100-$200 by removing/reinstalling the rack myself, however thats still a large number.

Looking for other thoughts/ideas/strategies, you guys tend to be a crafty bunch and I'd greatly appreciate the insights.

Ultimately I plan to keep the rig for at least another 10 years, so I have a long term outlook.

We had issues on the rear of the roof on my son’s LC. It was out of sight, so we cleaned it up and just hit it with some flat black.

Picture in this post:

Your issue seems to be in view, on the front edge of the roof, so this may not be a suitable solution in your case.

Take the opportunity to lead the 100s in a trend - paint the roof white like the FJs before it!
Plus, paying for mods always hurts less than paying for repairs. ;-)

Looks like the windshield needs to come out and inspect the frame opening for rust. I bought a LX a long time ago that didn't look anywhere near that bad, cost me $1500 to have windshield replaced, all new moldings, rust repair on the frame, and I didn't have the paint blended 100% blended correctly from the A-pillar to D-pillar.

Thanks guys - as much as I'd like to be a trendsetter @Manhattan I don't think my wife would be a fan (although cool idea). @jLB its good to know I'm not alone, but given the visibility factor I don't think I'm going to be able to pull that off, unfortunately, and instead will likely go the @TXLX100 route. I'll skip the blend as well, I think thats overrated for an older rig (and expensive).

Yep - that looks like rust under the windshield. Get it out and to a shop ASAP to mitigate before it gets worse. Went through that with my last truck - was glad to have it fixed!

If it's black and not super faded, it won't look as bad as other colors if not blended all the way.
