Desmogged my 87 fj60 today couldn't have done it without the famous currently 47 page "my desmog thread" but at 47 pages a bit too much reading so here is my contribution. Hopefully the layout of my photos will simplify things for some. Patient is an 1987 US market cruiser with all smog equipment in place. Not going to spend much on the simple part of the desmog, used a Jimc plug and egr plate kit and ordered pulley, pump is gutted till pulley arrives. Exhaust down pipe tube cut and welded up, cat removed (2 1/4 pipe with 40 series flow master, pcv tube welded up. Not keeping hac. Here goes the vac routing..

Choke opener. The diaphragm below this one is not used do not cap. (Right side lower in photo) the secondary diaphragm on the distributor will also remain uncapped. So don't be alarmed by these two things being open to atmosphere they can be routed to the air cleaner but its not necessary.

This one goes here

Fuel decel cut thing. Notice the center port with the bend in it at the base of the carb this one gets capped as can be seen in the latter photo with the BVSV.

A/c idle up. goes to the finned fitting that also has a port with the hose for brake booster vacuum.

These two are capped
IMAG1261-1.jpg

Two ports on gas filter capped.

IMAG1262-1.jpg

BVSV 1 is kept (upper of two BVSV's)

picture gets a bit dark this is running to second nipple on the bvsv

Vacuum advance runs from distributor (closest to housing) to where the pen is pointed. (Left lower nipple) NOTE: if vehicle is used at lower altitude the outer diagphram port on the distributor can be used as opposed to the inner (primary diaphragm) it will give less advance. 7 degrees as opposed to 13 degrees.

Configuration for this stays the same only the small vacuum hose now goes straight to gas filter instead of through the spaghetti that was removed.

If you notice the hic valve built onto the bottom of the air cleaner and hai diagphram on the aircleaner intake tub arent pictured. These units retain factory configuration and do not have any vacuum hoses running through the metal spaghetti thing so no need to mess with those unless you just want to replace the vacuum hoses with new stuff while you have the intake off. (which i did)

I was in a hurry to get mine back on the road so i used what the parts store had available which was 7/64 vacuum tubing. It is too small in diameter for my liking which will lead to the vacuum hose prematurely cracking and failing where it is stretched over the nipple. in the mean time i ordered 35ft of silicon vacuum tubing from mcmaster-carr part number 5236K832. once it arrives i will redo mine which at that point should only be a twenty minute job. At some point in the near future i will send the carb and distributor to jimc but currently this is my only transportation with a/c.

So how is it performing compared to before desmogging?

Very clear and concise. Nice work.

thank you! will see tonight hopefully. this actually started out as radiator job and while i was in there i figured i might as well do this and that lol. waiting on a couple of oil cooler coolant hoses and lower radiator hoses from toyota today, will put the radiator back in tonight and fire it up. did the split fan shroud mod as well with welded captive nuts. It ran quiet well before just had a leaky air rail but got an honest 15mpg on the highway.

upon installing the egr pipe block off one of my studs on the manifold broke off. i tried welding to it with the manifold in place but only succeeded in breaking the stud off flush. I ended up having to pull the intake and exhaust manifold to drill it out and install a bolt and nut. This turned into a blessing in disguise because when i removed my intake/exhaust manifold the intake exhuast gasket litererally broke in two. It was burned in half around #4 exhust runner. Which is a bit odd because this thing seems to have been running fine. i had actually taken it on three hundred mile trip the previous weekend.

good notes...thanks for posting

Good information. There is a document that was created by JimC and a couple other forum members (linked in my sig) that I used for all the information. But getting new perspective on these is always great. I am 98% done with my desmog, still have to remove the air rail and pinch and weld the down pipe.

The McMaster-Carr numbers in that doc don't seem to match the required size. What are you guys buying?

I bought the 6mm and 3mm ID black semisoft hi-temp silicone tubing from McMaster-Carr. Part numbers 5041K52 (3mm) and 5041K74 (6mm). This right? I was going by the doc linked above size and lengths - hope its accurate.

Yes stock sizing for the vacuum line is 3mm and 6mm however, 5mm will work fine as a replacement for the 6mm and is usually a good $0.30 cheaper per foot.

love the pics -- could you get another pic of where the bvsv 1 goes into the carb -- i forgot about the bvsv1 and put a hex in it

Very good
Went through that 47 page thread myself,
but now that the 2F is dead I no longer need it (unless I get a 2nd truck), but there are many who need this info

dougbert

the larger black tubing (2nd pic) -- wondering where you got it and size/fittings/clamps/order number - i went with blue and its see through not liking it - got my truck running better following your clear routing - this will help alot of people wanting to do this -- thanks again for your time spent

Believe that is the standard 5mm. I have some extra from my desmog if you want to pm how much you need.

I cant notice any difference, What I want to know is am I going to have any problems ? There is no smog laws here so ok that way. WHAT ELES DO I DO?:meh:
