Took the boys to a waterpark today. My first chance to roadtrip the cruiser with the finally installed o2 sensors and the ac working. Ran fine. Frustrating how gutless but better with the o2 sensors. It was 105 during the trip on a somewhat hilly interstate. Ran between 68 and 75 almost the whole trip. 2400 rpm in od and 3400 in 3rd depending on the hill. It kicked down alot and would hold 70 mph consitently except for the hills. I never got below 55 but really struggled on the long steep climbs. I had the ac on the whole trip. Temperature and oil pressure stayed normal except for a long time sitting with the ac on the the temperature crept up pretty high. As soon as I had any forward motion it cooled right down though. I got 11.8 MPG for the trip. How an engine can be so gutless and get such bad milage I have no idea but it starts and runs every day so thats something.

I'll bet if you went 60-65mph you'd be closer to or above 15mpg.

As far as the temp. gauge: If it even budges a smidgeon (whatever that is) from the middle when idleing, I'd cut the A/C immediately and and rev the engine to 2k or so till it comes back down.

Well Curtis I hafta say Nah Playa!, he has a relialble 3 ForEver! From my experience I can say that you will stay at that mileage. Hey Forrest, (no pun intended) when your temp gauge gets up ther like that shut it off and immediately spin the fan, in the right direction, and see how far it spins before it stops. If it goes more than 1/3 to 1/2 turn the fan clutch is to blame. I still cant run the A/C in mine even tho everything seems good.

I got 322 miles before the light went on last tank. I filled at 334 miles 19.77g.

better than normal....,it's the little things that make you smile.

Speyrod- what speed where you going? I assume all highway and relatively flat?

Only mods are 32" tires? That is amazing mileage. I assume you corrected for the tire diameter increase?

My best ever in my LX450 100% stock was 16.1mpg going 65-70mph and gingerly pulling away from stop signs and accellerating slowly. It was 90% highway and had some uphill/downhill sections. Adding the 33's made it dip down to mid 14's with 80% highway 20% town on my daily commute going 70mph.

Sorry Boopie; I disagree.

My stock 91 on 31x10.50's consistently gets 16-17mpg hiway. 'Course I only drive 60-62mph, and I have seen very few people with the patience for that.

Wave to me in the slow lane as you fly by. :D

 HA! I didn't know you were a 3FE guy too! You should put it in your sig line. I can get 14 on the hiway with the 35's @ about 80 or so but WOW! Never heard of such good mileage on OUR trucks. My truck doesn't like to drive at 60mph. Rpms are too high to hold in 3rd and way too low to keep speed in drive if I hit a hill. Or I am just making excuses cause I am impatient! I am now inspired:flipoff2:

I know; I know. I try to always mention it when it's relevant.

I had one, and only one, well-documented run last summer as follows: Mammoth Lakes, CA (elevation ~7000ft) to Ridgecrest, CA (el. ~2500ft), 181 miles from fill-up to fill-up, no top-offs. Second fill up took just under nine gallons! That's right: 3FE breaks the 20mpg barrier!!

I promise I am not exaggerating or making this up.

That was at 65-75 fwy depending on traffic. Yeah made me smile as well I wish it would happen every tank. Sorry no other mods just the tire and not correct as I think the 265 75 are on 1 or 2% diff over stock. I did hit about 10 miles of slow 20-30 mph traffic on the tank.

I forgot to post I'm running 33x10.5x15 BFG AT KO's. I towed my DJ trailer to 30 miles with it today. I didn't use OD but it pulled ok. Never dipped below 55 and ran well at 65. THe 3FE is pretty gutless but reliable. I'm buying the wife a minivan so I can work this thing over. I'm installing 31's next week. I need all the power help I can find. I think thats what it should have. It was made in 1990 and the doorplate says 235/75/15. It did have flares originally though. Anyone know? The speedo is 5mph off at 60. I'll test the fan clutch tomorrow and see what happens. As soon as I get a van this is going on blocks and I'm building bumpers/ winch / and possibly a SBC for some towing power.

Check your owner's manual (or call Toyota Publications and get one cheap; I'll dig up the number if you need it) for recommended tire sizes; 31x10.50 is one of them.

Hey DJ,

I've been thinking about your power/mileage issues, and some of your old posts, and one thing (mostly just a guess/hunch) that comes to mind is: Are you sure your TC (Torque Converter) is locking up? Your non-electronic A440F has L, 2, 3, D, *and* when in D and you get to around 47mph indicated, you should feel another rpm drop as the TC locks up. (TC is not locked in any other conditions.) Can you verify this?

Cheers,

Curtis

Yea it locks. I can feel it after it shifts into overdrive. I used to think I had a five speed auto. I kinda wish it didn't lock up as I lose the RPMs I need when I hit high gear. I'm buying some new tires this week for it. I'll use my GPS to compare the speedo and then do some math so I get the correct tire size. My calculations show a 20% difference but I don't know how that can be right. basically When I was driving at 66 on my speedo it took me 50 seconds to drive a mile. So whats your math on that. I'm driving to Salt Lake this week in it so I'll know for sure. I'm picking up something new for the cruiser and some New 37x12.5x16.5 Super Swamper Trxus Mt's for my scout. I'm trading off these bfgs for something in my factory size for the Cruiser. I'll let you know what I find.

I don't think that mileage is too bad for those tires and the speed you are traveling at and the terrain you are traveling. The route he took is not very flat and although not at a super high elevation this is not sea level. Lots of steep long hills on his route and it sounds like he was really moving. The bigger tires definitely weren't helping his cause. 75mph indicated is probably in the 84mph range with the tires. I can't recall exactly. If you drop to a true 65mph you will increase your mileage quite a bit. I never could bring myself to do that when I had my 91. I just put the gas in.

Yea I compensated for the tires on the speed report. Speedo read 67 when I was going 72. I got it up to 70 on the speedo a couple of times but it couldn't really hold that speed. I hope 31's make some difference. I like driving it now that the ac is working. It needs some love paint and body work wise but everyting else is fixed and working. I did lose my dome lights for some reason. Bulbs are good as is the fuse just no dome lights.
