Has anyone rigged up a gas strut (like the rear hatch struts) to swing the tire out and keep it there? That would be cool

Lots of people put them on their swing aways. They work great, but you need to make a stop for it or else the strut wont last long.

Here's one I put on the bumper I built for my dad's Jeep.

Cool. Do they hold up to the weather pretty well?

I'd say so, but I live in NV so its pretty dry here. Cant say he's had any problems with it since they are sealed pretty good (have to be to keep the gas in.)

I plan on adding them to my dual swing away bumper when I build it.

DiscoveredLC, can you show us the latch you used on that rig?

I designed and made this one from scratch. Its the same design Im going to use on the 80. I like it cause it adds a vertical support, and you never have to worry about the swing away opening up on the freeway or trail. Even if its not latched down, it wont open.

There's more pics on post #13 in this thread.

Nice. So what stops that thing from slamming into the back of the truck? Is it the strut, or is there a discreet stop somewhere I don't see?

BTW, did you build a bumper for your 80 yet? If so, got a thread I can peruse?

Havent started on the 80 bumper yet, but I will soon.

On the jeep, there's a rubber bumper on the tail gate where the spare tire went. It keeps the swing away from hitting the jeep.

Gotcha.

So, now all's we need are some plans, measurements, construction pics, and perhaps a welder....
