i have monroe shocks that have just gone out in the front as well as all my ball joints and 1 steering arm. The roads here are shocking, things go out quick. I was wondering what would be the best shocks for the job. I'm not worried about stability or firmness at all as it is very rare that i find myself driving on a road good enough to worry about high speeds.

What I need are durable, soft shocks. Emphasis on soft. I can get Bilsteins, ranchos, pro comps, old man emus, daystar, edelbrock, ful traction, skyjackers, superlift, teraflex, warriors, rubicon express, monroes, other cheap chinese brands, or of course, OEM.

I've heard alot of good things about bilsteins, some people say their more comfortable, others say that the originals are the softest, and that all the aftermarket ones aim at handling.

I've also read that adjustable bilsteins on the softest setting is the best bet, but ive also read that some models soft setting (mainly 5100s) is still not really that soft.

PS: my cars a 86 hilux

For normal driving on rough roads i would check prices on OEM shocks. For a stock suspension they should work good for the price. I have bilsteins on my mini, and they are a fair amount stiffer.
I just put new OEM shocks on my 100 (replacing worn out monroes) for less than $30 each.

I have run ranchos all my life and have always been happy with the results. Just depends how much money you want to spend. Bilsteins are pricy but also work exceptionally well. Steer clear of cheap auto part store shocks. they work well at first but dont last long

I would go for some adjustable shocks. I know that Rancho makes a kit that mounts inside the cab. Prolly going to pricey but it will give you the ability to adjust for the roads.

I'd go with OME, OEM, or Bilstien.

I replaced some Carquest specials (which were pretty rough) with a set of cheap ProComps on my truck recently. It's absolutely bone jarring still. Used to have Rancho shocks--they were as rough as any I have tried.

Contrast that to my sister's Bilstien 5100s on what is basically the same truck (she doesn't have a big bumper or winch, but otherwise identical) and her's drives like a dream. I'll replace my shocks again fairly soon, and when I do it'll be with quality shocks (Bilstien or OME).

anyone running the factory mini shocks ? my 4runner is a 86 stock springs right now.

I have been running adjustable ranchos on my mini since 95. Recently they blew out and leaked. Rancho just sent me a new pair. they stand by their lifetime warranty.

Found this site. I can order me all 4 oem shocks for around 130 bucks.

How woudl u compare them to some of the aftermarket shocks for a stock truck

That's a dealer web site. There are a couple of dealers here on MUD (including myself) that you could probably get a little better discount. Plus you're supporting the MUD community by supporting the vendors.

i was just surfing last night trying to find a price for oem. Pm me a price for all 4 shocks for a 86 4runner shiped to 21205

So whats your all opinion For a stock hight truck. I plan to lift it with Old man emu stuff in the spring. But right now. My shocks are missing there bushings and clang bang alot. Wouldu go with the cheap priced oem shocks. Or another brand. How does the oem shocks ride is it ruff and tumble. or softer
