No need RB's. Just get a set of Pitbulls like me!!

I have seen good and bad. Usually has to do with the owner. Usually have to be a pretty good dog trainer to get them to work well for you. Friendly, but most are not that smart. Likely from poor bloodlines. If you can get a good one, I have seen great dogs out of them. A bit of a crap shoot.

My in-laws in Joburg have a ridgeback. She's 8 years old, has a bad hip, and pees on the floor when she's startled (this is not new). Some would-be criminals there think that the hair standing up on her back means she's angry, and about to attack, so they give her a wide berth.

My friend has had two. They are the sweatest, toughest, most dependable dogs I have ever been around. Both were males, somewhat hardheaded when training, but very inteligent. We have done a ton of road trips with them, which involved lots of hiking and surfing. They have always been a pleasure to have along. Its nice to know that you have a big dog around when you are in the middle of nowhere....at night.

Awesome dogs, we have two and will be getting another in a year or three... Chow hounds though, hard to keep them at bay when camping and food is out. They were breed to hunt during the day and guard the camp at night.

Don't bark much, mostly when playing, wanting something, or when their guard has been raised. Gotta tell ya, when Rocky, the male, alerts, a warning has been issued!

They will hike ALL DAY with ya, keep up if you are on a bicycle, or, sleep if in the house or truck. They will find a comfy, soft & warm spot to laze around until something better comes along. And they can run. We've clocked than at 25 mph+ when following the truck or motorcycle.

They are alright with heat, but cold is their bane. One one particularlay cold camping trip Natasha crawled into my sleeping bag and pushed me out. More often than not, they snuggle up and keep everyone warm.

They are very smart & trainable, but not at retrieving, and not like a German Shephard. They get bored with repetition. Strong willed, but will bow to consistent and firm training.

They like to stretch their legs and run.

And sometimes stop to see what's going on.

Great with kids, especially when food may drop.

They watch their people, in this case my wife (whom you can't see here).

And just out and enjoying nature.

X2...or more on the Vizsla. They are a needy breed, they love people and need a lot of attention, but they really are a spectacular breed. Here's my newest. Rescued 2 year old.

Wow, they look like twins of my 2 RRs, even one with a blocky head, and one with a narrower head:) ...

Lucky to find what looks to be a pretty good one from rescue. Usually the rescue Vizslas are half-bred or have some other...deficit.

If anyone is interested my 6.5 year old male is going to Ridgeback rescue next week, he will be a good dog for the right person, we just can't do him justice with 2 little kids in our family, and with his protective temperament he needs more socilalizing than we can do right now. He's the one on the right.

Very little experience with them, but they do seem cool. I have heard they like to run, so they need activity.

I will say though that I have some experience w/ the GSD's. THey are very pack oriented, so I would be careful trying to add another dog to the family unit. I don't think a male GSD will just "accept" another K9 w/o some sorting out who will be the alpha dog. Be prepared...

WHen I got my male, I already had a female Golden Retriever. She was very independent and had little use for other dogs (and people). When I introduced them, she went over and "pecked" him w/ her nose. He didn't respond, so she tried to mount him! He snarled at her, and that was it. THey were fine after that. He was much more dependent on her company than she was on his. I finally got the GSD a cat that he could manage...

Good luck!

Good looking Vizsla, Mars! Looks just like my girl. My 2 will be 9 years old this coming June.

You know people ask all the time what they're like. I tell them, "you don't know what they're like until you have them. The only thing I can tell you is, 'they're almost human!'"

I can't say enough about the Vizsla breed. They're not for lazy people.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks were originally used to hunt lion in many areas of North Africa. Very fast, very tough, and very smart dogs. Ridgebacks are not very common around here, but I see them occasionally.

That would be South Africa;)

They are actually the most versitile hunting breed. Some have even hunted upland game birds the the RR.

Great dogs for the right owner.

Uhhh can we please continue with the Vizsla jacking of this thread? :flipoff2:

I had a half Ridgeback, half Lab years ago.
She was the best dog I have ever had.

Kodi and Prado are the best dogs I've ever known. They're super smart and have the gentlest nature. As Lowenbrau mentioned, their mom is purebred RR and their dad is a red shepherd. Quite the variety of characteristics in the pups. Great dogs. I really think the quality of the pup is very reflective of the parents.

Maggie, the RR/Redbone Coonhound X is a very very different dog...different in almost every way and often reminds me of an elephant in a china shop. But she's great company and a great playmate for Prado. Very aloof, but very much food driven and eager to learn...

Don't discredit how much the way a dog has been treated/raised influences how the dog behaves and thinks.

Haha, looks like Kodi is getting a nose full!

My buddy has one and she's awesome. Active, smart, obedient. She needs a lot of activity, but is one of the best dogs I've ever seen.
