Anyone have any expierence with Ridgebacks? I was around one in Africa and thought it was a very cool dog. We have a GSD now and he is spoiled rotten...I think it would be good for all of us to add another to the family. We are very active and outdoor oriented so getting exercise is not a problem. Thanks in advance for the input!

my friend has one and he is 130 pounds of whiney counter surfing oaf. sometimes he likes to sit on the little dog. he eats things (cubes of butter, casserole etc) of the counter and doesnt like to go outside when its cold. or hot. very demanding for a dog. i wouldnt get one. i dont think he was trained that well, but i have heard that they are all pretty stubborn and whiney.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks were originally used to hunt lion in many areas of North Africa. Very fast, very tough, and very smart dogs. Ridgebacks are not very common around here, but I see them occasionally.

Between Ratpuke and I we have three half beeds. Kodi and Prado are siblings from differnt litters and are mixed with a red shepherd. Both are really good dogs who didn't seem to get the counter surfing gene. Maggie is still a pup and half Red Bone Coonhound. She has charactoristics of both. She's more strong willed than the other two. I'm sold on Ridgebacks but maybe its just cross breeds I like.

They also need a good handler to put the time in. There are plenty in oz but they can be a terrifying dog if not looked after.
A lot of breeders here want the right answers before they will sell you a pup.
I like em

we had friends who had one. great big smart friendly goofy dog but hip displacia got him at only 6 years old. the guy used to run him while bike riding and apparently that's not a good idea with them.

Best friend in HS had one... be warned some like to chew... His 75 pound puppy knocked over his mother's prize antique couch and chewed off all of the feet... She was quite upset.

It was a huge friendly dog when grown.

i love ridgies... but they are not smart dogs. not they cant be trained, but they are time consuming. you want a trainable dog, get a lab.

when people describe their favorite dog as smart, think of how people describe their kids. i.e. i have yet to have someone i know tell me what a dense dip**** their 3yo is. nope. always the second coming of hawkins 'cause the twit used the toilet.

so. when a dog is untrainable, its always that its being stubborn 'cause its outsmarting you. its never because its just too damn dumb. consider ridgies "stubborn". their emotions vary. at times its "food, chase, s***" other times its "s***, chase, food". oh, and unsnipped males may challenge you for your women. the vet will cure that though. :D

That's Tanzanian Ridgeback to you sir. Get with the name change......

i disagree with the RBs not being smart. My uncles RB is coming to the end of its life, but she has been the smartest, easiest to train dogs our whole family has ever had, and we have had our shares of dogs. She has the stamina of a freaking monster, she goes mountain biking with him 3 times a week, is very protective, and was trained just after the petco classes and some time at home. Also, very friendly with kids. Gentle. I would not hesitate getting one.

They're plenty smart, just have a mind of their own, so not real easy to train.

My sister had one when we all lived back on the farm together many years ago. It was my fav dog out of about 5 different dogs that we had over the years. He was a little mental in that when left alone in her car one day, he tore the entire roof liner off.

Neat dog but was slightly touched in the head.
