does anybody here have experience with patio screens that retract ?

our house is on a lake and I would like to preserve the open view on those days when there are no bugs - and have maximum insect protection for the miserable times of year

the patio has walls on three sides, with a simple opening of 13 feet width and 8 feet 2 inches height

any useful input is greatly appreciated, Claudia

I have the screens that retract by spring into a long thin "box" on either side of the doors (multiple french doors open to a verandah) the screens meet and are held together with a magnet. Anyway not sure what they are called but pretty fancy and came with the house. I think they are about 12 years old and none of them work/look very nice. Some have little tears at the bottom where the retraction mechanism didnt release evenly; othere won't retract and some simply dont close properly enough to keep all the bugs out. I don't know if there is a better solution but this isnt it........

:hhmm:

I put two of the "invisible screens on our doors to the back deck at our last residence. They leave a lot to be desired. I wish I would have put on a regular track sliding screen.

We have a screened in porch and I never really thought about it blocking much in the way of view. I would screen it in and be done with it. Ours has square cypress columns with one 2x horizontal at about 42" high. Nothing in this world sounds better than a wooden screen door slamming shut.

RollAway Screen Doors and Window Screens

Another option could be, have a local company make removable screen panels, but storage for the times you don't need them can be an issue.

thanks for the link

yeah, I have seen plenty of those doors on various websites - all are for mounting inside relative to a regular door - I need something that mounts outside and is sturdy enough to withstand the elements (which consist largely of deluges of rain and occasional high winds)

our problem is that there are bugs during pretty much 90% of the year , so the patio has to be closed most of the time, and only opened for relatively short times when I want to sit there

those are what the contractor currently working with us proposed

so the experience people are having with these is good ?

Claudia I don't understand. Are you saying that normal screen blocks your view? That's not my experience FWIW.

I didn't grow up with screens - not conditioned to ignore them ;)

I'm guessing the conditioning period required (once exposed) would be less than the one required to ignore mosquitos and gnats.
