I am replacing my water pump. I have found after market pumps which are for 1968 and newer which bolt on but require different hoses, which is fine. My issue is that the new pumps seem to be taller than my stock pump. The original water pumps, which I have a couple, measure 5" from base to top of the disk that the pulley mounts to. The replacement pumps all seem to be 5 5/16" tall. This presents a problem lining up the pulley's to the cam and the alternator. I have spoke with the people at SOR, and they have not heard of this being an issue before. Has anyone experienced this before? Am I missing something very obvious? Any help would be appreciated.

Post up some pictures of your old pump and your new pump

That "disc", or flange, that the pulley bolts to, is a press fit. You can slide it down some to give yourself a little bit of adjustment...

Thank you for you response. I have found another water pump like my old one. I would like to know how to adjust the shaft on the new water pump to shorten its length. Do I need a press of some kind?

Did it fit , did you require any special tools or technique

Mac14 only had three posts and hasn't logged on mud in four and a half years. Wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a response.

Can't answer the fit part but no special tools are require to change a water pump on a FJ40 with a stock engine.

I cannot tell from the pump on the left, but, please do not smash down the shaft on the one on the right. If you see that clip/slit in the casting in the one on the right, the clip holds in the shaft , in place. It is obvious what will happen if you hit it trying to lower it. (The image I have is from a Ford, but it shows the basic design.

Forgot to mention, you CAN press the round flange onto the shaft.... Just do not hit that center pole that the flange is on.

My concern on the two pictured the higher one will cause a misalignment with pulley.

Agreed. The pulleys are different. So when changing to the newer, taller water pump, getting a matching pulley with a deeper offset is appropriate.

I think @shelfboy1 has one for $10 in classifieds right now.

I just found one of the deeper ones in my backyard you can have for $10 with a qualifying purchase...or free with purchase of a water pump.
