I need to replace the rear lock on the ambulance door and was not able to get the panel off to expose the clip holding the lock. I removed the screws and the nut for the gear but the nut was not coming off of the locking lever just rotates with the nut.

Is there a snap ring holding the lever on the shaft for the outer lever?

I've not got Ambulance doors on my '74... but they use the same handles and locks. So in the absence of someone else chiming in, No, there isn't a snap ring on the shaft holding it on.

If you remove the nut the handle should pull out. The outer handle is welded to the shaft that rotates and has the nut on it. Usually they come off fairly easily.

Kroil. I don't recall any issues taking mine apart 30 years ago, but that doesn't mean there weren't any. CRS is creeping into my brain like arthritis into my joints - getting old isn't for sissies.

I will keep messing with it. Didn't think about Kroil because nothing was that tight.

Now I see why the stem was turning when I turned the nut, it must be stuck on one of the fits.

Thanks for all the help. I got behind the plate with a screw driver to put pressure on the nut and and finally got the nut off of the outer door handle and the threads mush have been cross threaded at the factory and now the threads are wiped. Found a replacement on CCOT for the best price.
