Simple question: Do I need to use a spacer gasket on a replacement Fuel pump on an early 1980 FJ40?

Thanks, that makes sense. If I recall correctly, the spacer comes with two gaskets. One for pump side, one for block side of the spacer. I have replaced the pump without removing the spacer from the block and using squeeze gasket stuff for the pump side.
Edit: after rethinking, I believe the gaskets came with the OEM fuel pump.
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed. Very helpful!3 lines on the pump needs a spacer
2 lines on the pump no spacer
1980 should have a 3 line pump
I recommend taping over that hole in the block after you get the pump off before attempting to remove the spacer and gasket. All the material will likely be brittle if it’s never been replaced before and chunks will break off. I recently replaced mine on a 79 and lost a piece of the gasket into the oil pan because it chunked off and managed to fall into the fuel pump hole. Took me 3 hours to fish it out. Don’t make this mistake.
I have not taken it off yet, although I’m sure it will happen eventually. That’s good to know I was mostly concerned about the oil pump screen and it partially blocking it since it was a decent size piece. Thanks for the heads up!Have you ever had your pan off? There is usually so much junk at the bottom. Not saying you wasted your time, but, it would be fine. The oil pump as a screen to prevent debris from hurting anything.
