Just replaced my started with a Denso. Went to start the car and it was like the battery was totally dead. Jumped it and it all started. Tried to drive around the block and the car died after about 50 feet. Any ideas what’s up here?

Hello@dubyehnel ,
The no start ( no starter rotation) is a symptom of bad or improperly installed starter contacts. Was the replacement starter new or rebuilt/refurbished? With rebuilds it's a common that the contacts are not installed properly. Jump starting, as you experienced, can provide higher voltage and current overcoming the contacts. It will not correct itself. Several threads detail the repair process.
The stalling sounds like a possible loose connection. Verify all the wires at the starter and battery are tight.
Is the check engine light on when turning ignition to ON without trying to start? No light, no start, no power is being supplied to the ECM.
As stated in my previous post most likely caused by bad starter contacts or improperly installed contacts.Any idea what could be the culprit?
Thanks for the quick reply. As stated in my previous post most likely caused by bad starter contacts or improperly installed contacts.
Starter Contacts & Plunger are the working parts of the solenoid that is attached to the body of the starter. All Series 80 have basically the same setup but there are three different models of starters, 1.4KW, 2.0KW or 2.2 KW. Most likely yours is a 2.0 KW. You can search the forum for pictures. Thanks for the quick reply.
Do you think my starting issues related to starter/solenoid?
Does late model TLC/LX450 utilize starter relay like the older models?? I didn’t see anything mention of starter relay in FSM.As far as I
FYI, my rig 97 TLC with 200k miles.
Have you removed it and looked inside?
I replaced my plunger and contacts very easily for about 60 bucks.
Works like a champ.
Pic is of the old plunger and contacts. Pretty worn.

Picked up a used 2.2 kw starter from voorland80 (many thanks again!). I thought it would be nice to see how the starters compared in size so I lined them up. Pretty impressive how big the 2.2 is

Those parts are relatively inexpensive. Your option is to replace the starter. Starter contracts/plunger are normally good for 125K miles. If yours are original they are due for replacement.Much appreciated the forwarded info.
I am trying to gather possible scenarios from folks experienced similar situations before spending money on parts & components that I may not need
Worn out starter solenoid contacts. Cheap and easy to replace. Available at most parts stores.Hello
Recently I’ve been experiencing similar issues but not consistently. When try to start, I hear a single click with no engine turn over (no dimming of dash lights). Other times it starts normally. Every once in a while, the truck starts with 1-2 sec delay. Battery voltage measured at 12.7v with engine OFF, alternator charging 13.5-14.3v with engine running. But jumping the battery will start the truck with no issue. Put a brand new battery, still same issues
Any idea what could be the culprit?
Thank you all for your advice. Yes, it was the original toyota starter (+30yrs old) unit that was having intermittent issues.Worn out starter solenoid contacts. Cheap and easy to replace. Available at most parts stores.

As the message you quoted says... Starter solenoid contacts. 99% of the time that is all you need. Just ask for them by name in pretty much any parts store. They usually can be found in a semi universal packaged kit for Toyota starters out on the customer accessible shelves in the electrical parts isle. No need to try and get Toyota contacts. They are just a piece of brass.Thank you all for your advice. Yes, it was the original toyota starter (+30yrs old) unit that was having intermittent issues.
Anyone know internal parts need replacing & associated p/n that help to rebuild the starter? I hate to buy an aftermarket starter.

Just a small correction to your post, those contacts will be made out of copper, not brassNo need to try and get Toyota contacts. They are just a piece of brass.
For some reason I am as likely to call brass copper and copper brass as not.Just a small correction to your post, those contacts will be made out of copper, not brass
Thanks for the suggestion. I did make sure the battery + connection was tight with good contact. It may sound simple but I have chased a similar issue after replacing a starter only to find a bad connection at the positive battery terminal it took less then a quarter turn to get it tight enough to solve the issue. I had installed military style terminals years ago so if yours are still stock or you do not have a bunch of accessories added it may not apply to you but is a easy cheek that can get overlooked
