Hey there guys, I am in the process of tearing down my engine for a rebuild and everything was going good until I got to the crankshaft pulley. How does it come off I have the tool that the guy at autozone recommended and it looks similiar to the one in the Haynes manual. However I can't figure it out. Could someone please fill me in on how to get the thing off................Thanks JP

IIRC you thread the center bolt in as far as it will go, and then start tightening the outer bolts, they will pull the pulley off.



FYI getting the fawker back on is a much bigger bitch. You'll need dry ice and a torch. (freeze shaft, heat pulley and slide on quickly).
 
That puller looks like mine. The way mine works is you thread the outer bolts into the pulley so they have full purchase and won't strip out, then tighten the center bolt.

I think that's what Bailey meant. He just forgets his meds once in awhile. :D
 
Am I crazy, or is the big nut still on the pulley in the above photo? You might want to take that off first. :D
 
I used the same puller as above, but had to use longer bolts to get it to work properly. Putting the pulley back on isnt too bad.. I hit it with a block of wood and a hammer then used the crankpully nut to press it on, took about 5 min.

Well the damn tool broke when I was tightening the thing down........................ so back to autozone to get a new one..

Also, the point trevor brought up above, the huge nut (crankpully nut) on the end of the crankshaft stays on during this right?. that is the way the haynes manual has it drawn up?, and thanks for the help guys
 
No. The big nut keeps the pulley on the crankshaft. I believe you'll need a 46mm socket to remove it. I used one of those three (or four) jaw pullers on mine, and didn't have any problems (after I took the nut off).
 
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......... sometimes you just want to slap yourself....... it didn't make sense to me that way either, but I swear that is how the haynes is drawn up. Oh well I will give it ago tomrrow with the nut removed;)
 
I see the picture you are talking about, it does look like the nut is still there. Another reason why the Haynes manual sucks. No big deal, that's part of learning; I've done much worse to my Cruiser. :)
 
Give me time Trevor I will do much more damage....................... but thanks thanks for pointing that out, I am guessing that is why I broke the tool.................
 
Hey JP just do what richard did use a BFH. Seemed to work for him.
 
Don't bang the pulley back on with a hammer if you can help it. That puts serious shock on your thrust bearing. Better to get a longer bolt and pull it on with that.
