Hey guys. So I’ve been scouring the forum for ideas and just a ton of basic knowledge. Everyone has been great on here. This site really is a wealth of knowledge. With everything going on right now, looks like I’ve got a month off of flying so I’ve got plenty of time to knock out a project or two, albeit on the cheap. As I’ve mentioned in other threads, I’ll be replacing the transmission eventually. I don’t have the funds for that now.
So I’ve decided to seal the truck up completely so that I can start reupholstering the interior (mom runs a fabric shop). As you can see in the pics, rust has been an issue with this truck. I got it cheaply, and fairly low mileage so I decided I could live w the rust. There’s a few dime sized holes on the roof that I’ll patch w various methods and I plan on getting the truck repainted as well. So before doing that, I wanted to know what my options with the rain gutter are? I’ve seen a few different threads of cruiser heads doing expansive welding and while those look great, they’re outside of my skill set. So I was thinking, could I just grind it off/down before it’s painted? Feel free to laugh at the idea lol

this guy is in the 55 section, seems now he has issues with water getting in thru the door seals

I still think it will need something to seal it as there are 2 pieces of metal formed together, lower and the upper.

ya very good point. Not sure what to do. I know I need to beef up the weather stripping, that’s for sure. But yes, don’t want to run into the problem he has.

I had a freind with a rotten 60 gutter and he epoxied it with epoxy resin and glass cloth- like repairing a boat- and it fixed it. Didn't look showroom quality any more but who cares for a 35 year old truck.

Aluminum angle, relatively thin wall and short legs. wire brush existing metal. Epoxy or rivet angle to bottom side of remaining gutter. Cut triangle shaped pieces from horizontal leg of angle, to fit curves at rear. Use 3M two part sealer to seal gutter. Polish aluminum.

Beyond your skill set? Buy a used gas mig for $200, an angle grinder and learn how to weld! Play on other things for 20 hours, get good at grinding.

You wont believe how easy it is.

There was a posting here within a couple months of a white 60 with black accents, IIRC, that had the rain gutters removed.
Tried a quick search but didn’t see it immediately.

It’s interesting looking for sure.

Ya I just looked too, couldn't come up with it. Idk, in theory it shouldn't look bad or that much different, but theories aren't always correct. Just not too sure what to do. I want to get it painted this summer so hoping to have an answer by then

Clearly the PO tried some sort of Bondo/epoxy mixture that didn’t work and was done very lazy. But this is what I’m dealing with. Obviously a roof transplant is the best option, but not feasible right now.

those photos say that the problem is really bad; look at my avatar photo... the only way to 'fix' the problem is extreme...

looking at the above pics, removing the rain gutter is not going to solve your problem
start poking around and you'll see how bad the situation really is.

Hi, I agree with 3 puppies. Pull the head liner and examine all areas closely. Mike

yup I started that process yesterday. It is bad. But the pics I’ve posted are the worst of it. I’m running it by a local body shop this morning to see if they’ve got any ideas. If not I’ll just work with what I got I guess. I’ve got to seal it up one way or another, can’t keep letting it leak.
