Dug into my damaged fender flare today, the mounts on the inside are all trashed. And thanks to interstate speeds it's no longer attached, I'm not buying a new one, so off with the others. Read the FSM procedure for removing the other flares, seems complex, so how about this? The flare that is off, appears that I could just snip the remaining bracketry off and be done. Problematic? If not, I was thinking to do the same with the others. Carefully pry them off, then cut the hardware off.

Problems I'm not foreseeing?

Thanks,

TJK

a big rubber mallet and some precise placement.... use your's thats already off to see what direction these brackets slide on then you knwo where to hit.... worked for me....

After you get them off, Lowe's has plastic plugs (they're even white) that fill the holes really well. I think you have to drill the holes out just barely. Couple people in our club have done it.

Pulling the front flares is easy. Just reach in through the holes in the engine compartment to access the nuts holding them in place. The mounts on the rear doors need to be drilled out.

Rub them against trees. That's how I did it. The fronts would be a pain otherwise. I guess you kinda have to get the bolts out anyway if you're going to leave them off, so going in through the fenders from the inside might be the best bet.

Well, what I was thinking was if I cut the ends of the bolts off from the inside, short of them rattling around in the quarter panel, who cares?

Don't have my FSM in front of me, but prior to reaching in on the passenger side you have to remove the charcoal canister, the fresh air intake, and something else. That's the pain in the butt I'm trying to avoid. Plus I have dual batteries so my relocated washer fluid bottle is in the way too.

Cool, thanks. I'm going to have them Rhinolined over eventually, but was looking for a way to keep the incessant rain out in the meantime. Thanks.

Are you talking about the T-shaped mounts that have nuts inside the fenders and quarters? those would be tough to cut off without damaging the paint. You could cut through the middle part and leave a square plug in the fender behind.

I made little steel clips that rivit to the flares in place of the plastic webbing that all got torn out. When i go wheeling, I pull the bolts at either end of the flare, lift up and throw the flare in the back. It takes five minutes for all 6 peices.

Royal Rose did his with the white plugs (white truck), Darren Webster did his with black plugs (red truck). Both of them got the plugs at Lowe's. Darren told me he had to just barely reem the existing holes out to get the plugs to fit. I'll probably wait until I crack one of mine before I do it.

OK, they're off. Took all of ten minutes.

Can someone please tell me the name and size (and depth) of the tool that removes the metal brackets from the rear doors? Small tool like an allen wrench would do it, except it's square. Need to go pick one up.

Thanks!

Todd,

You need to drill out the rivets. Can't remember the exact size....just step it up with one until you find it.

Jared...my local NAPA had catalogs of them in all shapes and sizes. They had some in white, black, and grey. I stuck with the black as well. There are a few oblong holes on either side that really don' need to be drilled out...the plugs will fit the hole fine. PM me if you need any help with it, I still need to come over and check out your new control arms.

Gumby,

That's a great idea. Do you have more pics? Maybe one of the backside of the flares so we can see how you rivetted the bracket to the flare.

Thanks,

Yeah, pics of my 80 as you tear it to pieces! :flipoff2:

Yep...best way to get those brackets off is to drill the rivets out. Takes all of 10 minutes to get all 4 rivets done.

Hopefully you didn't do what I did -- I just yanked my flares and panels off (no more Lexus body armor for me :D). As scraped as they were, I didn't see the possibility of selling them. If you took you flares off carefully, I think you could easily pay for the liner spray job by selling the flares. When I had to replace a flare on my '94, it was something like $300 for an unpainted flare.

Here's pix of mine with my 100 glorious LX holes
