I did a google search but couldn't find anyone in the area that could do it. Would you share the contact info of where you got yours done ? I would be willing to ship it to them.
Thanks !

Even if you pay $15 its still a great deal. I tried peeling mine off but was a PITA!!!
So i just sanded, looks good but fred69 method is much better:clap:

I blacked out mine in the spring by sanding then hitting with primer and Rustoleum semi gloss black. Within a few weeks I noticed a few pits. A month and a half later quite a few more.

I don't remember which mudder it was but they had tried using Appliance Epoxy with good results so I re-prepped and sprayed it with three coats of the AE and it looks freaking nice and so far it's as tough as nails. No chips or pits and looks just like the day I sprayed it. You can get it at Home Despot and apparently only comes in two colors: Black and white. I'm planning on using it on the upcoming sliders and rear bumper as well.

I took mine to a chrome plating place and had them strip the chrome off. It cost me three bucks

Hey Ferd69,

I was wondering how your grille turned out after you had it stripped? Did you paint it all black and what did you do about the Toyota lettering?

Thanks

Geez, found a plating place 4 blocks from where I work!!!!! Visiting them tomorrow

As for the lettering, unscrew the TOYOTA part from the grill

All I did was remove the worst of the bubles with a razor blade then sanded it until it was nice and flush then took the ol' rattle can to it, its held up nice so far

Yep did the same thing. Removed all loose/bubbled areas and then sanded to a nice smooth surface. Then broke out the rattle can. Turned out nice.

I sanded mine down with 150 grit paper. Cleaned with painters prep solvent. Got some dupli-color adhesion promoter in a rattle can (Parts store). Primered with etching primer, also rattle can. Sprayed with 2 cans Dupli-color bumper and trim black. I also took the time and took my toyota emblem off and painted it silver. Then I taped off the "TOYOTA" letters and painted that black as well. Pulled the tape and put it back together. Looks killer! Think I got about $25 into it!

On a different note, to reveal the chrome in my headlight doors, I used superfine steel wooll to get rid of my blotched graphite paint.

Cheers,

john

I'm sure these guys would not mind if a slew of mudders started sending them grills and bezels for stripping. Not sure about mirrors. And if you guys want to save yourself the trouble of painting the parts, these guys can finish it off in Black Nickel!!! You can even mask off the TOYOTA and have it painted or dipped in another finish...

Good Luck all!

Its Cal-Tron. The quoted me $25 +$10 shipping to take care of my grill and headlight bezels. Still a really good deal in my eyes.

The idea of Black Nickel sounds cool! Pulling all the chrome pieces and having them treated would be nice, I think.

I've removed chrome off of plastic by forcing it to corrode using a battery, charger, 5 gallon pail, and some wires. It took all the chrome off without any damage to the plastic.

In hindsight, I'm thinking a little muriatic acid would have worked a lot easier! But hey, I'm a Corrosion Engineer, so I naturally thought of doing it the hard way!

muriatic acid bubbled a bit but didn't touch mine at all.

I peeled the loose and gave it some Tennessee chrome.. called it a day.

I respray it yearly.

black nickle sounds really nice, I may send them my spare grill to do.

How long did you leave it in the acid? It should probably take a couple days. If it's bubblin', it's workin'!

I tried most of the chemical techniques found on the interwebs. Easy Off oven cleaner doesn't work. Bleach will work but it requires a lot of bleach and time. If you had a long under-bed box 36" long and about 5 gallons of bleach it would take it all off in half a day. Or you could stand it up in an old trash can and just flip it. But then you'll have 5 gallons of black chrome tainted bleach to deal with.

here we are 8 years later and I called to see if they’re still doing this...
Gentleman on the phone (failed to catch his name) said they stopped a few years ago doing this because it became too risky because some of the plastic parts had spent so much time in the sun the oils had been stripped from them and once the chrome was taken off they would just shatter into pieces. He’s considering starting it back up though because they get phone calls constantly about it. Told me to check back in 6/7 months. Has anyone else found a decent company that will do this? Here in Seattle I found 1, but they wanted $200 to dechrome my grille 🙃
