Any tips on removing the parking brake cable from under the dash on a 1978 FJ40? I'm about to drop the transmission and transfer case, but can't get the darn thing disconnected. The FSM shows a picture of a parking brake assembly that's on the floor rather than under the dash. If I spend another hour trying to get this off, I'm just going to cut it and replace it.

There should be an elongated nut that threads on the cable housing at the point where it comes thru the firewall, to tension the housing. If you unscrew the nut, the tension on the cable will lessen enough for you to be able to push up on the cable.

IIRC, The top of the cable is 'T' shaped and rests in a pair of notches on the parking brake handle subassembly. Once you can push it up about a 1/4inch, you should be able to rotate it and pull it down from the handle subassembly.

Here's a picture of what I'm working with. The cable basically goes from the tcase, through the floor where it joins the firewall, and up to what you see in the picture. I've loosened the nut and elongated nut, but there's enough tension on the cable that I can't lift the "T" high enough to clear the notched bracket it's sitting in, nor can I drop the elongated nut down low enough to get the threads out of the bracket. Possible that the PO put a short cable in?

Ok, I went back and re-read what you wrote and figured it out. Here's a picture of what to turn to loosen the parking brake cable under the dash enough so you can lift the "T" out of the bracket. Thanks for the help!
