How do the aftermarket remotes work with the immobilizer? I've thought about that route but storing a key fob under the dash so the truck will start isn't work the security risk. I really like the fact that if I park my truck remotely it will be there when I get back. If you're motivated enough to skid an 8,000lbs truck onto a flatbed and across 100 miles of dirt road you can have it.

I have a CompuStar remote start system in my '15, it works well. No issues with the immobilizer. However, the engine does shut off when you open a door (but not the hatch, for some reason). Range is very long, I've haven't really tested it much but 1/2 mile is possible if I'm outside. I have the nicer remote with feedback that tells me if the engine is running. There's all sorts of programming stuff you can do, like making it keep the truck at a certain temp (it will keep restarting), how long to run once started, etc. But ya it's a pain to carry 2 fobs.

Hiding a fob under the dash? That doesn't seem like a good idea. Doors won't lock!

@KLF it sounds like your solution is piggybacking on the native remote start capabilities. I would think other solutions could support emulating pressing the start button. To allow this (in theory) one could fasten a spare fob sans battery to the backside of the start button. This would allow for normal door locking but also allow for the start button keypress event to not be interrupted by the immobilizer. Unfortunately, it would also allow for keypress start upon window break. Unless the alarm disrupts the start event. Though you could always employ an additional manual start defeat, i.e. a hidden switch that must be pressed. But that creates system complexity.

I have a spare fob deeply hidden inside my truck (requires disassembly, wouldn't be found easily). It's part of my not-be-stranded strategy. If you've never had the adrenaline rush of not being able to find the keys your kids 'borrowed' when 100 miles from anything you've not lived.

Most common these days is a bypass module that acts like a key and interacts with the immobilizer.

Or they add an actual key into the remote start unit to interact with the immobilizer.

How do the aftermarket remotes work with the immobilizer?

Those work but they have a very limited range. If you don't need the range then likely work for you.
The OEM kit is an easy install also and works the same. Again limited range.

That's pretty nice. The domestics have had this a while. OnStar, FordPass, uConnect Access, etc... Even Hyundai/Kia with BlueLink/UVO.. It's nice to see them adding it. But I wish they still had a good remote start via the remote like GM, Ford, and Chrysler do... I prefer factory, just wish it was on par with others. Each time I look at Toyota's tech I'm thankful it's reliable but I wince at how behind it can be.... LX570 $95k - no Android Auto or Apple Car Play...but they have on a RAV4... Love...and Hate Toyota..hence the name. Don't get me started on Toyota tech...sort of a thorn for me. Still love my LC though.

Sounds like you should just go buy a Ford.

I've done it on my 21 with ease. I opted for the version with the app which works well. The range is unlimited, provided there's at least a little cell service. You can also pinpoint the vehicle via GPS with the app which is kind of neat. Alternatively, you still have the ability to remote start the vehicle with the fob, the range is just kind of short.

I've had this setup for about a year now with no issues. I'd do it again.

The range is entirely dependent on which model you get. If you get the version that just utilizes your OEM fob, yes it's pretty limited.

Naw, I like to own my vehicles for 25+ years with minimal repairs and still have good resale value.

The limited range won’t be an issue for me. And I do prefer one key fob. Sounds like a good fit.

I too have this with the app and OEM fob connectivity/functionality. They've got an option of a "long range" FOB too, but that would indeed add another FOB to your keyring. The app is usually pretty good with network coverage, but I have had intermittent issues with connectivity (usually in areas with limited cellular coverage) or parking garages. I installed it myself and would not hesitate to do this again. That said, there are competitors that offer different benefits with their products.

The reason I’m posting, I read a note in the Lexus Enform page that for some 2010-2017 Lexus models, due to 3g cell phase out, Lexus Enform and the remote start won’t be available after October 2022. Not 100% sure it LX is included, but it may impact if you have the subscription and OEM remote feature.

open the hood and look up on the uderside. Factory remote start will have a yellow caution sticker.

I installed the factory kit on my 2015 but cannot get the system to register at all. If anyone has tips/tricks to get it to register please let me know as I cannot turn it on in techstream until it registers

I would do the OEM remote start but use the credit card key and dont carry a fob.
In order to do a longer range start through my phone ill probably go another route.

As far as I understand opening the door will kill the engine no mattter what you use even OEM correct?

Is drone the best out there at least for iOS devices?

based on what I've read and experienced - yes, opening the door will kill the engine regardless of remote start option used/installed.

I have the 12volt solutions remote start. Had it on my previous Tacoma as well.

Works with the factory fob by pressing lock three times. Need to be at the standard key fob distance. There is also an app that works anywhere I have cell service. Works great.

Recently (2018+) redesigned Toyota’s (RAV4, Avalon, Camry) offer Remote Connect (if equipped with SiriusXM Radio). You can start/stop engine via smartphone app using Verizon cell network for $8/mo. It’s decently nice as you can change locked/unlocked status, windows status, door status, geofencing alerts for guest/kid drivers, fuel level, etc. also you don’t have to be on an annual contract, you you can buy it just in the winter months too. Undoubtedly will be coming to LC upon refresh/redesign whenever that may.be.

This is an old thread but, I have the factory remote starter in my 2011. It definitely starts the truck but none of the climate control turns on, no defrost, no heat, just runs the engine. Does anyone know if there is a setting to change that?
