I said “oops”. Accidents happen. If I understand the law correctly, you're legally required to say "Ooops" when you do that.
I am trying to use all LEGAL means of evacuation and draining that I can. I have never attempted the “self-release-oops” method. No idea what would happen. A whoosh? The earths atmosphere igniting into fire? Red and blue lights flashing with the popo staring at me?You have two choices; pop a line and release it where it stands or take it to a shop.
It’s a 1990 year vintage. I am doubtful it came with R134a as R12 isn’t illegal in Japan AFAIK. One shop I spoke to might be able to help but the dude said he wants to see the truck which is understandable. If it came with r134a then it has all the parts that are designed to work with r134a and r12 would probably be worse in that system. A system designed from the ground up for r12 does not work as good with r134a. in the US 91-92 had r12 and 134 didn't come until 93. The condenser for r12 is smaller then the one for r134a.
Yes, blower fan works fine after I replaced the fuse. First step in this process is to find a shop/person to evacuate the R12, then proceed from onwards. Are you sure that it doesn't already have r134a in it? last time I came across a car that still had r12 in it was about 2008 but maybe r12 is easier to get in japan before it was brought over. You probably already read about this but a system designed for r12 wont work as good with r134a. You could replace everything to the r134a version if the best AC performance is important to you. Is your blower fan is working again after you replaced the fuse? let me know if you want to bring it by for a charge after you get the new compressor in.
I was only responding to mudgudgeon when he said that all 80s in Austraila came with 134a. I'm looking into a way to get the r12 disposed of for you. i have a recovery machine and an empty tank i can put it in.It’s a 1990 year vintage. i looked into and as it turns out i can evac the r12 for you. Send me a message if you want to make an appointment.Yes, blower fan works fine after I replaced the fuse. First step in this process is to find a shop/person to evacuate the R12, then proceed from onwards.
Ok, sounds good. New compressor arrived. Currently at work, not in a rush.i looked into and as it turns out i can evac the r12 for you. Send me a message if you want to make an appointment.
Following along. I have a similar issue.Ok, sounds good. New compressor arrived. Currently at work, not in a rush.
* did call the auto parts store and they rent the gauges and pump but nothing to capture the old Freon.Following along. I have a similar issue.
Mine works when the engine is cold and the starts to fade after a while. Belts started squeaking today when AC is on. I guess it’s starting to lock up.
I see people recommend the Denso compressor, is it better then the other brands or just preference?
My plan is to take it to a shop and have them evacuate the system then I was told you can rent gauges and pumps from an auto parts store to recharge the system. Has anybody done that before?
Not sure on renting. Harbor freight sells a vacuum pump but you would have to get a tank to put the R12 into. Parts continue to arrive, planning to just convert to R134a…..hopefully all of the lines are solid and will hold the pressure on the high pressure side.Following along. I have a similar issue.

What's the bottom line? How much coin did you drop on all the parts?Update………
Tore into this project today, new Compressor came from Rock Auto (GP 6511601), I got a new Evaporator ( Denso #047600-6880, Toyota #88501-60020) new Dryer from PartSouq, new Condensor from Parts Geek (NP477-0554). I have the retro fit kit called out in the TSB (#88840-33020) the receiver O rings, (#90099-14044) and the suction side O ring (#9099-14045). Still need to get PAG oil ND Oil 8. Hope to finish up by Saturday.

The Compressor from Rock Auto was $155, the Dryer was $55 from Partsouq ( I had some other parts in the order so the shipping wasn’t crazy) the Condenser was $182 (incl S&H), the Evaporator was $180 from Impex, the r134a retro fit kit was I think $35-40? I just bought some PAG oil (ND8 Denso) for $31. R12 evacuation was $51 from a local mechanic, member on here (Bussey Garage). Refil with R134a…TBD. I still have to tackle the evaporator. I just hope after all this, the AC at least works and makes a 90+F feel like 70F inside the truck. So far parts total is just shy of $700.What's the bottom line? Well, all buttoned up. New compressor, evaporator, condenser and dryer installed. I lubed all of the new O rings at the connection points with PAG oil and put the required amount of PAG oil into the “out” side of the dryer (110 cc) as per the TSB. One snag however….. the new compressor has a longer case and there fore the compressor pulley sits more forward and doesn’t line up with the idler pulley or the No. 2 crankshaft pulley. I might be able to remove the compressor pulley and flip it around the other way but I am not sure if that would work. The electrical connector plug for the clutch is also different and I will have to either pull the electrical plug off of the old compressor or, find a new plug and connect it to the other end. All that work, it would be sad to not have any AC.

The part number that I found is 88320-60340 or 60320. 5 different parts suppliers don’t have the compressor. Another part number I found is 88320-14521 which seems to be a replacement component. Nope, NA at the 5 places I looked. Japan 4x4 is confusing so I didn’t bother there. And now, after some research, someone will pony up a part number, and an in stock source. Rock Auto is where I got the current compressor. Why not just get the correct compressor for the 1HD-T?
Readily available out of Japan.
