I have been delinquent keeping an up-to-date thread on the truck. We had an awesome summer together, driving mostly around the region. I'm still getting to know the truck's systems, which has been fun and not too frightening a challenge.

Here's what we've been up to in 2018:

1. I replaced the wheels and tires with brand new Toyota OE steel wheels and the new BFG All Terrain KO3's

2. I replaced all of the belts and wrote up a little article on how I did that: How to change belts on 3b engine

3. My transfer case shifter was a little stiff, so I took your advice and sprayed some WD-40 on it. Now 4WD works great. How to Engage 4WD

4. I did an oil change, using Shell Rotella T4 (non-synthetic) 15W-40 and an OE Toyota Filter (90915-YZZD3): Oil for 70,000km 3B Engine

5. I replaced the front parking lights with Toyota OE bulbs: Front parking lights are not working -- why?

6. I began to diagnose a cold-start issue, but it has surpassed my troubleshooting abilities, so I got my FSMs organized, and we went on a short tow trip to the mechanic.

A few photos from summer...

A new side/rearview mirror. The other one was loose and while I was driving home, it decided to peace out, so I installed a new OE one. Looks awesome :)

There is this guy at my workplace who also does science, likes beer, and drives a 70 series. He's got me beat because he DD's his. I think he lurks around here @calsbeek.

Where did you get the rear mirrors?

Where did you get the rear mirrors?

The easiest way is to get the part number and put it into google and you will find a few dealers who sell them. You can compare prices

I’ve looked around but can’t seem to find anyone who has them new.

Are you using the part numbers off later models like post 99? I think its the same mirror but as an upgraded part number.
From an 05 FZJ79 GGC LH 87940-60371 RH 87910-60141 Euro4x4Parts says they have them in stock (138 euro) if Beno cant help you.
You ll find a lot interior parts are available with upgraded part numbers, but they can be different colors.
These long mirrors are probably still being fitted in some markets

The BJ75 has been pretty trouble free, so I haven’t had much to report. I only drive the truck maybe once or twice a week.

The clutch release cylinder was weeping, and I also noticed that the brake pedal sinks a little, which to me indicates that the master cylinder needs rebuilding. So I bought the OE parts from FJ Parts and here they are:

I am trying to decide whether to order the soft line that runs from the release cylinder to the hard line. It doesn’t look cracked or anything, but maybe it is also tired and gross on the inside from years of the same brake fluid. What do you guys think? Worth it to replace it?

Hello,

Since you have already taken the whole mechanism apart, it is worth replacing the soft line. You are in there and it is an easy part to replace.

Yes, good thinking. The original is NLA, but FJ Parts told me they can sell me an OE part of the same dimensions.

I would get a new master and slave cylinder. Often the rebuilds dont last long unless you can get a machinist to put new stainless steel bore in there

I have a new slave and will order a new master, too. One bolt for fastening the slave to the transmission broke, and part of the bolt now sticks out of the transmission. I am now fielding ideas for how to remove the portion of the bolt that remains.
