Just reading the words “Boreal Forrest” makes me want to roast red meat in a cave…

i’ve been having a little “surging” issue with red the last week that’s slowly gotten worse. it’s thought i likely had a vacuum leak somewhere again leaning it out but i finally had a chance to look under the hood and could hear a “snapping” sound beside the engine. low and behold a plug wire has been too close to the exhaust manifold and had burned the casing. i could visible see it arcing every time it fired. i taped the crap out of it for tonight. i have a hot rod shop that sells individual wires i’ll pick one up monday. the rest are all good but maybe i’ll get some plug boots too just to be safe. i don’t want to replace the whole set as they’re really quite new. tomorrow when im not so lazy ill see if my fan shroud fits without hitting the fan. i need a shroud. it gets too hot without it!!

played a little with the fan shroud. it’ll fit side to side but my fan on the 350 is a little too low. i’ll have to make a bracket that’ll drop the shroud down a little. it’s probably less than an inch or need but i’m using the 40 as my daily driver so can’t take the time to actually pull the rad etc. it’ll be a project for when i have my other cars running. today was sound deadener and carpet in the chevelle day.

the steering wheel colour looks totally gross now!!

the other option. have is to put an electric fan in. i have a flexalite black magic sitting here not being used. any thoughts about electric fans with oem radiators? i read now and again that they are better with the newer aluminum rads because the flow more air. mechanical fans are better with the old copper/brass rads.

any truth to this? the electric is tempting because it’s in hot weather when i’m not moving that it gets hot. that’s when the electric obviously shines

I have dual electric fans on my 68’ Chevy pickup. They work fine, but I’m not keen on the noise. You can always hear the fan/fans over the idle of the slightly warmed up 327 with dual exhaust. BTW I’m running a copper and brass 4 core. No cooling issues here in the Deep South.

I’ve said it before, but I’m a fan of the Taurus fan with the Volvo relay. The Volvo “soft start” relay calms down the electrical spike when the fan comes on. I’ve been running the same fan with my LS and before that my SBC. Very happy and they’re cheap at wrecking yards. I’ve got two spares hanging in the garage for future projects.

so i hit a rain storm last week and my wipers that have normally worked flawlessly stopped mid cycle. i figured i blew a fuse but that’s not the case. so i tried to gently push them back up to their parked
position and they slowly started to work and eventually after a few cycles started working normally…. until yesterday when they stopped again. with a gently nudge i can get them to cycle a few times and then they stop. it seems like something is physically resisting them until they just stall. any particular area i should start looking/cleaning. i cant imagine its too difficult of a system to trouble shoot but has anyone had a “common” issue that i should jump right to?

If you remove the plastic covers on the inside below the windscreen, you can see the linkage moving - these can work loose and bind up

other issue have raised its ugly head so haven’t sorted the wipers yet. on my way home the other day my oil pressure suddenly dropped. pulled over and checked my oil level. as per most fj40s it leaks a little so it was a little low but i had oil. so i thought i could limp it to the nearby automotive store to get more. at a stop light i turned it off to run it as little as possible but then it wouldn’t start. starter has been intermittently not starting but this time it was really dead. so my wife came and towed me off the road. i poured more oil in (about 1L not the 350) and she pull started me. still no oil pressure. dang it! turned out the sender wire broke. so anyway my 16 year old had nothing to do today while i was at work so he fixed the wire and then dropped the starter. i have an extra new starter in the shop so he figured out how to bolt it in and shim it and wired it back up!! truck starts perfectly. Well done boy!! now the only issue is the new starter is one of the high torque ones with the big aluminum mounting block. it’s now in the way of the clutch slave cylinder so i have to figure out how to make a new mounting bracket so im still not quite on the road. i have to go back to work tonight for some urgent stuff but maybe this weekend be can complete the job!! pretty pumped he was able to do all that on his own. he’s getting good!!

got the slave bracket modified and reds back in action!! it still my daily for now until i get my fj62 back from an engine rebuild (hoping in the next couple weeks now!!). after that we’ll park it and get down to work on getting it properly sealed for the winter!
