I have a recently acquired 80 series that I want to bring back to its former glory. The goal is to make it reliable enough to take on a cross country road trip without fear of it breaking down and upgrading some things in the process. Currently, it has about 220k miles on it. While I'm pretty mechanically inclined, I'd like to have a shop do the big stuff, plus it's always good to build a relationship with some of the local shops.

Does anyone have any good experiences with shops in the valley?

What is “big stuff” to you? We have a local member who is the service director at Riverview Toyota. You will be treated well there and we receive a discount on parts too. You can hit up @murf to get an appointment.

I was going to recommend Camelback Toyota and to talk with murf. Did Camelback Toyota change it's name or did murf move to a diffent dealership? Just trying to stay in the loop.

Congrats on the purchase. Your Arizona brethren in Copper State Cruisers are here to help. See below link on current recommendations for parts and service.

might be worthwhile to talk to @inkpot and @richardlillard1

It really depends on where you wanna take it and get the service you are looking for. For parts go to Riverview Toyota in Mesa right off Dobson and the 202 and let them know you are part of the Arizona 4x4 club or CSC. If you want someone that is reliable and WILL do the work talk to @inkpot or @richardlillard1 Or another option is Scott Higgins over at Avid Offroad. If it makes you feel better that is were Murf's 40 is now and that is where my 80 will be as of tomorrow. My first time at Avid I was in heaven, Scott and the guys over at Avid probably have a Cruiser from generation in their yard. Scott did the head gasket while he was still working at Camelback Toyota. I have taken my 80 to Camelback since he left and was lied to about service performed. The newer generation of mechanics does not like heavier jobs. They want high-speed easy jobs.

Just my .02 cents. Hopefully, with the information you have received and will receive, I hope it helps you make an educated decision.

You guys are truly a wealth of knowledge! I've already reached out to @inkpot and I'm excited to hear back and put a plan together for the Cruiser. Does Avid do repairs too or are they more into modifications and customization?

@inkpot and myself are out wandering around the Tonto today (in opposite ends of the Forest, oddly enough). I’ll be around the shop tomorrow afternoon. If you’d like to swing by, shoot me a PM.

Talk to Tom Price at Desert Toy Shop. He used to work at Camelback Toyota and helped me out a couple times now short notice. Great stand up guy and knows his stuff

Yes Avid does do maintenance and repairs.

I just got back from Vegas and talked to Scott Higgins @Cruiserhiggs at Avid and am super impressed by his work and cant wait to get my LC today. Got news that my real issues might lye in the wiring harness, we've already discussed that. But the boys over at Avid do great work. The prices are amazing!!!

Not Phoenix, GIlbert but another insured, reputable shop, and cruiser owner.
