i have a 1980 California spec 2F. Aside from the installation of a snorkel, the systems are stock. There was a time i was working through a non-start issue after a tune up. Turned out to be something stupid, but in the process discovered that this distributor, had a relatively short production period, was only installed for a few model years, and at some point in the future, should it need to be replaced, a replacement is virtually unobtainum.

now in full disclosure i did not really chase every lead, shook every tree, because in the end, the current distributor was not the issue for the then current problem.

but it has me concerned. is there a vendor that has developed a product, taking the 2F distributor from a 60 series, and done the modifications for it to run in an older vacuum advanced 2F ?

The FJ60 distributor will drop in to any 2F block; you only need the dished pushrod gallery cover from an FJ60, and the igniter and coil from an FJ60 or a late U.S.-spec FJ40.

Your 1980 already has an igniter and coil that will work with the 60 dizzy, it would be plug and play, except for the dished pushrod gallery cover.

You can also pull your current distributor, do some minor maintenance and have it last a long time.

You can do that. I did. 60 series Big Cap dizzy into a '76ish completely de-smogged 2F in a '74 FJ55. Got a single diaphragm vacuum advance module from @4Cruisers to replace the leaky 2 diaphragm original unit, got some advance springs off the wall at my FLAPS to play with and just like that I've got the best running dizzy I've ever had, and I've tried all the LandCruiser F and 2F vacuum advance dizzys there are.

My 72 came with a Delco dizzy back in 82. I think I worked on it back in 2005. Well a few months ago it was running rough - lots of play in the shaft. Bought a $120 chineesium delco off Amoron, minor difficulty's installing. Move old drive gear to new dizzy first. Wow it runs like a champ now. Even my old NAPA cap, points/condenser and spark wires fit.

Buy a new points dizzy from Toyota (you won’t notice any driveability difference between an electronic 60 dizzy).

I’ve used both extensively - points dizzy is great for long term parts and bolt-on ease.
